Position Summary:

Systemically applies substantial specialized knowledge and skill derived from the biological and behavioral sciences to the care, treatment, counsel and health teaching of individuals who are experiencing changes in the normal health processes, or who require assistance in the maintenance of health and the prevention or management of illness, injury, or disability. Functions within the limitations of the State Nurse Practice Act, Central Michigan University, Health Services, and the department's nursing services policies and procedures. Duties primarily involve health care services for university students, faculty, staff and dependents.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Current registration with the State of Michigan Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN), or eligibility for such. Two years work experience as a Registered Nurse. Demonstrated skills in patient assessment. Demonstrated ability to adapt readily to handling multiple tasks simultaneously and adjust to rapidly changing demands of the workplace. Demonstrated ability to effectively apply the nursing process to assessing patients, planning and implementing care measures, evaluating outcomes and addressing change in an appropriate and timely manner. Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image. Ability to perform the essential functions and requirements of the job. Current basic cardiac life support and AED certification.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Demonstrates clinical knowledge, analytical ability and independent judgment necessary to implement individualized and comprehensive nursing care. Provides direct nursing care to patients and assists clinicians with medical procedures. Administers medications, including intravenous infusions, injections, nebulizer treatments, antigen immunotherapy. Performs cerumen irrigation, EKGs, spirometry, pulse oximetry, peak flow measures, O2 administration, visual acuity testing, TB skin testing, and other nursing treatments and procedures appropriate to medical office practice. Assesses patient health care needs, triages patients appropriately, initiates emergency protocols when necessary. Develops plans of care as needed, and coordinates case management for patients, assuring follow up as appropriate. Collects, transports, and disposes of human tissue/bodily fluids samples. Practices universal precautions; complies with bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan and other infection control guidelines and standards. Reviews laboratory results and initiates appropriate action; communicates results to clinicians, patients, and others as appropriate. Documents nursing actions in the electronic medical record in order to provide an accurate medical reference and accountability. Maintains privacy and security of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, other applicable regulations, and professional standards and ethics. Serves as a patient advocate and provides instruction and health-related counseling to the patient and others. Utilizes all available resources, consults as necessary with clinicians and peers, and acts as resource regarding college health nursing services. Provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing and other allied health team personnel. Demonstrates professional behavior and promotes positive working relationships among staff and other departments. Participates in orientation, precepts nursing and allied health students, and mentors new nursing staff.
