Here’s the scoop - Summary

The Formulation Assistant works with the Innovation and US Formulation Lead to ensure the goals of the department are met. This position is accountable for monitoring the nutritional integrity of our Acana and Orijen recipes and validation of a Biologically Appropriate diet. This role focuses on maintaining a nutritional database of ingredients and finished products and using this information to provide trending analysis and the preparation of monthly reports. Working closely with QA, this position will be responsible for ensuring samples are sent to the labs in a timely fashion and testing schedules are being followed.

The Formulation Assistant will be based out of our Morinville Research and Innovation (R&I) Centre with the flexibility to occasionally work out of our Acheson and Edmonton offices and has a hybrid schedule between home and office.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Responsible for monitoring the nutritional integrity of our recipes.

  • Organizing and compiling nutritional data for ingredients and finished products.

  • Creation of reports and trending analysis of nutritional results.

  • Thorough maintenance of records of all formulations, test results, and other intellectual property, including storage in a secure manner.

  • Participate in the development of ideas for new product development projects that are in alignment with the Company’s mission and values.

  • Consistent support to the Innovation and US Formulation Lead in relation to data entry and nutritional reporting and monitoring.

  • A willingness to be actively involved in a creative learning environment and passion to develop new skills

  • Demonstration of knowledge of the Company’s policies and practices regarding health, safety and the environment, including commitment to personal compliance with same.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

What are we looking for?

  • Minimum Masters Degree in Animal Science or equivalent

  • Knowledge of ingredients used in the production of premium pet food

  • Knowledge of animal feed formulation; formulation of extruded and retorted diets considered an asset.

  • Computer proficiency with MS Office programs

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Passion to learn, develop, and assist in the implementation of nutritional strategies for dogs and cats.

  • Detail-oriented, with a good ability to review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to SOPs and GMP.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task and set priorities.

  • Uses discretion and judgment in handling confidential, proprietary or sensitive information.

  • Able to work effectively independently or within a group.

  • Ability to work in a pet food production environment

  • Ability to attend and/or conduct presentations/meetings.

  • Some extended hours of work may be required.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds using correct and safe lifting technique.

  • PPE may be required for some locations where this position is regularly required to work.
