Mobile County Personnel Board Animal Control Officer I in Mobile, Alabama

Kind of Work

This is entry level routine work enforcing animal control laws, ordinances and regulations.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)Investigates complaints about vicious, diseased, nuisance or stray animals; picks up animals running loose or being kept in violation of laws and ordinances; transports animals to the animal shelter; dispatches personnel by two-way radio to investigate complaints; records location where animals were captured; feeds and cares for animals; administers medications and vaccinations; euthanizes sick, suspicious or unclaimed animals; disposes of bodies of dead animals; operates animal control vehicles; enforces animal control laws, ordinances and regulations; issues warrants for violation of ordinances; refers those who refuse to comply with animal control ordinances to the proper authority; attends court and submits pictures and physical evidence; unloads food and supplies from supply trucks; cleans vehicles and animal shelter facilities; checks in animals using security stick while handling animals; sees that animals are properly tagged and penned; releases animals to proper owner; assists customers in the adoption of animals; assists in maintaining vehicles and equipment; keeps daily records of all calls and complaints answered, gasoline used and mileage driven; files complaints about biting animals; makes activity reports; works after normal business hours on a rotational basis and on weekends, as assigned; performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and a minimum of one year experience working with the public, preferably working with animals; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Essential Requirements of the Work

Some knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing the capture, custody and disposition of animals; some knowledge of safety practices and procedures in dealing with animals; some knowledge of the geography of the area assigned to patrol; some knowledge of the tools and techniques employed in animal euthanasia; ability to read, interpret and explain animal control laws, ordinances and regulations; ability to make clear, concise reports; ability to operate animal control vehicles; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to operate a two-way radio; ability to perform strenuous tasks such as lifting, carrying, crawling and running; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Special Requirement

Must possess a valid drivers license from state of residence.Must obtain Euthanasia Certification within the first six months of employment.

Distinguishing Features of the Work

An employee in this class is responsible for patrolling an assigned area and for performing routine custodial tasks in enforcing animal control laws, ordinances and regulations. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures, requires the exercise of some independent judgment with public contact and enforcement problems, and may require working after hours or on weekends.Injuries from animals pose a work hazard for employees in this class.
