Cultures and sets up clinical samples from necropsy and from Laboratory Receiving. Determines correct procedures and appropriate media needed for each sample request submitted to the lab. Analyses direct culture plates and determines which bacteria are probable pathogens or common contaminants, and confirms suspect pathogens in a timely manner. Sets up the appropriate susceptibility panel for the animal species and bacterial isolate. Is responsible for reading aerobic cultures. Sets up and identifies fungal cultures. Prepares and follows standard protocols for shipment of BSL 2 organisms to other labs both within and outside of the University. 40% Analyzes and records test results to determine bacterial identifications. Performs literature searches to research unknown organisms. Reports preliminary and final results to pathologists and clients outside of the University under strict deadlines. Enters and reports final results of bacterial case work-ups into the LIMS. Verifies the work of others to ensure all controls are in the proper ranges and all data is transferred and reported correctly. Organizes work and sets priorities to meet deadlines, and adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a team member, and thereby provides excellent service as defined by the customer (pathologists, clients, and others). 35% Trained on the safety concerns, proper use, and general maintenance procedures for each piece of equipment in the laboratory. These pieces of equipment include incubators, refrigerators, freezers, water baths, balances, microscopes, a mass spectrometer, a centrifuge, biological safety cabinets, a chemical fume hood, pipettes, and an autoclaves. Checks equipment daily to ensure proper temperature, CO2 levels, humidity, and other functions are maintained. 10% Maintains quality control documentation for laboratory tests and reagents created, the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment such as using, calibrating, identifying malfunctions, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance, and sample quality. Follows proper procedures when quality requirements are not met. Performs and documents QA/QC activities and corrective actions related to test performance. Tracks non-conforming work using Q-Pulse software and suggests areas of improvement to limit non-conforming work. Trains student employees on QA/QC requirements, challenges media with appropriate organisms, sub-cultures controls on a routine basis, and keeps a computerized record of quality control results. 10% Interprets and follows all media SOPs and recipe cards related to media production, operates all media related equipment, including the autoclave, the plate pourer, balances, hot plates, and the water purifier, properly produces media needed for the Bacteriology Lab, records all production information within the proper media logs and quality control documents, and performs sterility checks of media when the Media Lab head is unable to make media. (Media Lab Back-up) 5% Qualifications Required Qualifications: BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years. Preferred: A Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Bacteriology, or Clinical Microbiology and/or experience working in a laboratory.
