Job Overview:

Responsible for complex instrumentation & control systems design and development of an assigned scope of work on a McDermott project. Work includes (but not limited to) FEED studies, cost and planning studies, MTO’s, building layouts, specification development, wiring design in AVEVA instrumentation and/or CAD, location plan layouts, AVEVA 3D modeling support, manpower requirements, oversight/coordination of Mopex offices and the review and wiring for interface to vendor packages. Also, apply in-depth skills and broad knowledge of the industry to address complex problems and nonstandard situations for design/engineering, fabrication and construction.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare the development of key project deliverables, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Junction box/panel wiring diagrams/strip reports(SPI)

  • Populate instrument index in SPI for design

  • Block diagrams

  • Installation details

  • Analyzer systems (wiring and tubing connections and tie-ins)

  • Instrument / fire & gas location plans

  • Telecom location plans

  • MTO’s & associated Bills of Material

  • Instrument loop sheets (SPI)

  • Building layouts

  • Cable schedules/lists

  • Cable sizing

  • 3D Instrument modeling

  • Participate in project reviews, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • P&ID Reviews (as required)

  • Model Reviews

  • Independent Design Reviews (IDR)

  • Development and support of vendor packages, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Create and issue required MTO for vendor package interfaces

  • Create all design drawings to allow interface to vendor packages with remainder of facility including electrical

  • Perform design review of supplier documents for instrument and non-instrument packages

  • Provide support for the Inspection and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of mechanical packages

  • Site Support, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Provide technical support to Construction personnel for I&C design related inquiries as needed

  • Project development and coordination activities (when acting as the Lead Designer), including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Maintain and promote a focus on McDermott’s end-product throughout engineering, fabrication or construction

  • Take responsibility for vendor package review and associated interfaces

  • Become fully familiar with the project contract, scope of work, basis of design, specifications, schedule and all inter-discipline requirements; including identifying concerns as early as practicable and taking appropriate initiatives to address the issues

  • Coordinate closely with piping and I&C engineering with in-line dimensional data

  • Report to and coordinate with engineering lead, as well as with instrument design manager

  • Supervise and coordinate all activities associated with instrument designers

  • Carefully evaluate, communicate and manage change with full awareness of project impact

  • Assist the I&C lead engineer with cost, schedule, quantity, progress, budget control and quality of project deliverables

  • Support model reviews

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Typically 15+ years of detailed instrument design experience, including engineering experience on offshore projects English Level B1; B2 desirable

  • Function as an instrument project design lead or instrument task lead if required

  • Detailed knowledge of design techniques, sequence of deliverables, and schedules

  • Working knowledge of the content and application of standards, codes and guidelines, including ISA, NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI and API

  • Proven project coordination and execution skills in delivery of completed project design deliverables

  • In-depth technical knowledge of the detailed design process involving large cap EPC Projects

  • Experience with the utilization of multiple office project execution (MOPEX).

  • Proven experience with Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI), AutoCad, MS Office Suite including Excel and Word

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Prefer AS degree

  • Prefer prior design lead experience on EPC projects for petrochemical, oil & gas

  • Prefer experience at site during construction and commissioning
