Boeing Defense, Space, & Security (BDS), Vertical Lift Division is seeking a Senior Handling Qualities, Guidance and Control Engineer (Level 4 or 5) to join the Flight Technology team in sunny Mesa, AZ . Our team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit. We participate in all phases of the design, test, and support of the Apache Helicopter, AH-6, Chinook helicopter, V-22, and developmental aircraft.

The ideal candidate will help lead a high-performing team that directly supports the design of new and modified rotorcraft from a stability, flight control, and handing qualities perspective. As a key member of our team, you will support the design of flight control systems and model/analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Apply control theory to lead the design of control laws that achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, system failure robustness, and loads considerations.

  • Develop test plans, provide flight test support, and document/deliver test results.

  • Develop and validate physics-based linear and non-linear flight simulation models that include mathematical models of various rotorcraft components (main rotor, tail rotor, fuselage) and participate in wind-tunnel/flight testing to support model validation.

  • Support the design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective.

  • Lead wind tunnel, pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation, hardware in the loop laboratory, and flight testing in support of vehicle design and analysis.

  • Interface with program personnel to support customer questions and develop analysis to respond to competitive bid proposals.

  • Have significant experience with Matlab, Simulink, and mixed software language (C, C++, FORTRAN) programming.

  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other disciplines such as aerodynamics, dynamics, avionic systems, and structural design to optimize vehicle characteristics.

  • Support training/mentoring other team members.

  • Approximately 10% travel is required for testing at off-site locations.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. S ecret clearance Post Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience): (see education and experience for the levels below)

  • Bachelor of Science degree from a accredited course of study in engineering.

  • 5 or more years of experience with Matlab, C, C++, FORTRAN programming.

  • 5 or more years of experience in aircraft stability and flight controls.

  • 3 or more years of experience functioning in a role that requires team/project leadership.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 10 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (level 5)

  • Currently holds a security clearance.

  • Masters degree or Doctorate in engineering field (mechanical, software, aerospace).

  • Experience designing and working with flight control systems.

  • Experience working with digital control systems.

  • Experience with system identification (such as CIFER).

  • Experience with rotorcraft simulation tools (such as FLIGHTLAB, RCAS, BEFLYRT, GENHEL, COPTER, BHSIM, GTR, or VERTISIM).

  • Experience supporting rotorcraft flight test.

  • Holds a pilots license

Typical Education/Experience:

Level 4:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Level 5:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary pay range for senior level 4: $126,650 - $171,350.

Summary pay range for lead level 5: $153,000 - $207,000.
