Union Tank Car (UTLX) Quality Control Specialist in Marion, Ohio

 

 

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

 

This position is responsible for performing in-process and final inspection on railcars as well as other quality inspection activities of parts or components, to ensure that all maintenance, qualification and inspections at the repair facility are complete and compliant with applicable US and Canadian regulations, AAR Interchange/MSRP's, Marmon Rail standards/procedures, and equipment owner requirements. This includes a review of documentation and the final car file to ensure completeness and compliance. The incumbent has full authority and is required to identify nonconforming conditions, generate nonconformance reporting and hold or stop work on a railcar or component pending resolution.

 

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Performs visual, dimensional, and mechanical inspection of railcars and components throughout all stages of the railcar maintenance, qualification, and inspection processes to assess the as found condition or quality of work performed. 

• Performs shop floor audits to ensure production operations are performed in compliance with applicable US and Canadian regulations, AAR interchange/MSRP's, Marmon Rail standards/procedures, and equipment owner requirements.

• Assures all identified nonconforming conditions are identified by reports, forms, checklist and/or the nonconformance reporting system.

• Reviews shop floor documentation and final car file to ensure completeness and compliance. 

• Works with production to identify and plan for the day's shipments to ensure verifications/inspections are made in a timely manner.

• Verifies cars are properly secured, closed, marked and identified prior to releasing for interchange.

• Reports adverse and/or non-compliant items to the responsible supervisor and QA Manager and follows-up to confirm that remedies have been put in place on items before the car is released to subsequent processes/stages. If rework will interrupt shipments the incumbent must notify manager.

 

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:

 

• Proficient with Microsoft Office, AS400 system and applicable electronic systems.

• Ability to communicate technical information in writing and speech.

• Possess working knowledge of applicable US and Canadian regulations, AAR Interchange/MSRP's, Marmon Rail standards/procedures, and equipment owner requirements.

• General mechanical aptitude and ability to use rail industry gages, dimensional inspection tools, weld inspection gages, testing techniques and test equipment necessary for railcar inspections and maintenance.

• Ability to instruct employees on proper railcar maintenance activities using establish procedures and training material.

• Ability to climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet high, bend, crawl, squat, kneel, and stretch to perform tank car inspections.

• Ability to enter tank cars via a manway opening of 18" to 20" in diameter.

• Ability to tolerate both heights and confined spaces while working through periods of inclement weather.

• Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger/warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe work environment.

• Possess considerable stamina to perform the essential functions over a large geographical plant area.

• Be willing and able to wear safety equipment, such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, earplugs, and respirators.

• Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.
