The Opportunity

This position will be based in Madrid and the candidate will develop and execute strategic plans, creative campaigns and other initiatives that deliver high-impact results focused on driving awareness for Abbott in Iberia (Spain, Portugal) and Italy. A strong leader who can influence and negotiate with other members of the senior leadership team, you will work closely with business divisions, marketing, government affairs and public affairs colleagues to deliver positive business impact across these key markets.

As Director of Public Affairs for Iberia & Italy, the candidate will:

  • Lead the Public Affairs function in Iberia & Italy, driving high-impact results that support Abbott’s business goals.

  • Develop and execute strategic plans, initiatives and stories designed to generate awareness and shape opinion of Abbott among key external stakeholders across Iberia and Italy.

  • Work cross-functionally with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve our goals: from leadership and marketing, to regulatory and government affairs

  • Establish effective digital strategies to engage key audiences and generate greater awareness and engagement online

The candidate must be able to think strategically and provide thoughtful counsel to a broad range of internal and external contacts across all levels of management.

The role will closely partner with General Managers and Business Unit Heads to create and execute the strategic plan.

What You’ll Do

  • Proactive storytelling: Drive greater external awareness for Abbott through proactive storytelling and measurable, insight-led local initiatives.

  • Media & external relations: Cultivate and maintain excellent relationships with editors, media, and other key external influencers to help build and protect the company's reputation in Spain, Portugal and Italy. Act as a company spokesperson. Formulate appropriate messaging to support Abbott’s brands and business.

  • Issues management: Demonstrate an ability to manage issues effectively

  • Engage employees: Partner with key stakeholders to lead enterprise-wide, employee communications in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

  • Drive the business: Deliver communications across Spain, Portugal and Italy that will build Abbott’s competitive advantage, position, and market share.

  • Agency management: Team, budget and account management. Ensure vendors and suppliers are managed well and delivering ROI.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum education is a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  • Minimum 12 years’ corporate communications/public relations experience.

  • Multinational experience with a Healthcare, Tech, FMCG or Pharma company preferred.

  • Understanding of Spain, Portugal and Italy market dynamics and U.S. business practices necessary.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Required fluency in Spanish and English. Additional fluency in Italian is preferred.

  • Proven record in PR campaign development; stakeholder relations; issues/crisis management.

  • Proven success in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment.
