Principal Investigator, Ueli Rutishauser, PhD invites you to consider this Research Associate II opportunity to join his dynamic team!

The Rutishauser Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai is investigating the neural mechanisms of learning, memory and decision-making level of single neurons and networks thereof. We are a systems neuroscience laboratory and use a combination of in-vivo, single-unit electrophysiology in humans, intracranial electrocorticography, eye tracking, electrical stimulation, behavior and computational, and theoretical approaches. The Research Associate II performs routine and increasingly complex tasks and procedures as part of the laboratory of Dr. Ueli Rutishauser. Dr. Rutishauser and his team are studying human cognition and memory using invasive and non-invasive electrophysiology as well as behavioral and computational methods. The Research Associate II will participate in ongoing research activities, including but not limited to; acquiring, processing, and analyzing data; and reporting findings. The incumbent will learn and subsequently perform independently a variety of complex data processing and analysis steps and complete experimental procedures to support ongoing research projects. The RA II member will assist Dr. Rutishauser in laboratory management and maintenance and will assist with preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. This position is well suited for a motivated talent to gain more research experience in a productive, stimulating, and supportive laboratory in preparation for application to graduate or medical school.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the design of new complex or unusual protocols and techniques.

  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results and assist in identifying and troubleshooting of unexpected results.

  • Supports laboratory operations.

  • Maintains lab equipment and related records and may coordinate use of lab equipment.

  • Assists in the operation of specialized equipment, as required by the area of research.

  • Observes and follows safety standards and procedures.

  • Orients research laboratory assistants or lower level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures.

Department-Specific Duties:

  • Assists the Pl and other laboratory members in management, processing, and analysis of electrophysiological recordings (EEG, spike sorting).

  • Assists with interactions with IRB and NIH.

  • Independently complete complex analysis procedures after appropriate training.

  • Uses, modifies and adjusts Matlab data analysis routines.

  • Performs spike sorting of electrophysiological recordings.

  • Processing and analysis of structural MRI images.

  • Maintenances experimental records.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science related field such as Neuroscience, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Experience:

  • One year of research laboratory experience.

  • Research experience analyzing EEG data or similar.

  • Knowledge of and strong interest in systems/cognitive neuroscience.

  • Research experience working with human subjects preferred.

  • Programming skills in Matlab or similar.

  • Excellent organization skills and very meticulous; learns new tasks quickly.

  • Self-motivated; works well under supervision but also capable of carrying out work independently.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with other scientists and physicians.
