DEFINITION:

Renders professional medical services to patients as part of the first year of a post graduate educational program under the supervision of medical staff.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:

Positions allocable to this class are supervised by medical staff and are responsible for providing routine medical care and treatment to a variety of patients during the first year of post graduate education in a hospital approved for such training. Positions in this class follow established department policy, procedures, and guidelines as determined by medical specialties and sub-specialties and receive close direction by physicians and medical staff in providing medical care and treatments.

Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Examines, diagnoses and treats patients in admitting and treatment rooms, clinics, wards and special services.

  • Develops and documents an initial plan of care based on patient history and physical examination.

  • Formulates a diagnosis and consults with medical staff concerning appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • Re-evaluates patients individually and as a part of a patient care team on a routine basis to note condition and progress and modify patient care plans as indicated by medical staff.

  • Orders and prescribes medications and monitor for effects and adverse reactions on patients under immediate supervision of attending physicians.

  • Orders and interprets routine findings of diagnostic, imaging, and laboratory tests and reports to medical staff.

  • Records medical case histories, physical findings and progress notes to document treatment on patients according to hospital policy and/or JCAHO standards.

  • Keeps patient case records current and prepares reports; fills out forms and corresponds with other parties involved in the medical care of hospital patients maintaining confidentiality according to State and Federal laws and hospital policies.

  • Provides emergency medical care to patients as directed by medical staff.

  • Performs additional medical duties of physicians in any specialty area to which the individual may be assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A Doctor of Medicine degree conferred by an approved medical school-OR- Degree of Doctor of Osteopathy conferred by an approved osteopathic school- AND- Current Registration with the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California as a student in the first post graduate year of training.

PHYSICAL CLASS:

3 - Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications based upon the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire information weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the weighted part of this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%.
