Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The focus area for these positions is structural engineering in support of LANL nuclear facilities in the Nuclear Facilities Engineer job category. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Technical Area 55 (TA-55) currently has the need for mid-level and senior-level structural engineers to support LANL's primary Plutonium Facility. Within the Laboratory, virtually all plutonium operations occur at this site. TA-55 is the nation's most modern plutonium science and manufacturing facility, and it is the only fully operational, full-capability plutonium facility in the nation.

LANL's proximity to the Pajarito Fault System and subsequent site-specific Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis lead to unique challenges to design and analyze nuclear and industrial structures for earthquake loading. This opportunity will allow the successful candidate(s) to develop a unique understanding of linear and nonlinear behavior of structures that support earthquake and other beyond-code basis loading conditions. The candidate(s) will participate in seismic rehabilitation of structures using a variety of techniques including strengthening with Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcing.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

In this position, the successful structural engineering candidate will work with senior staff and independently to implement LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures to support work at Technical Area 55. You will engage in the following activities:

  • Work in a collaborative, multi-discipline, team environment on maintenance, repair, and new design of industrial and nuclear structures at TA-55. Work will involve structural dynamics and implementation of LANL site-specific seismic hazard and other beyond-code basis loading criteria.

  • Apply broad and/or unique knowledge of nuclear facility engineering systems, processes, and calculations; application of nuclear facility engineering methods; and application of technology aided nuclear facility engineering tools to nuclear facility engineering problems.

  • Seismic retrofit of existing nuclear and non-nuclear structures and systems.

  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and customers during design development.

  • Assist senior structural engineers with development of technical reports, calculations, drawing packages, and specifications. At this level, the successful candidate will be expected to support these work functions independent of oversight by senior personnel.

  • Implement requirements in ACI, AISC, ASCE, DOE, and LANL codes and standards.

  • Perform equipment and system walkdowns supporting project deliverables.

  • Review technical deliverables from external subcontractors.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 ($146,800 - $254,700)

The senior structural engineer will work independently and in a team capacity to implement the LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures to support work at Technical Area 55. You will engage in the following activities:

  • Work in a collaborative, multi-discipline, team environment on maintenance, repair, retrofit, and new design of industrial and nuclear structures at TA-55. At this level, the candidate will be required to support larger projects independently, having broad and/or unique knowledge of nuclear facility engineering systems, processes, and calculations; application of nuclear facility engineering methods; and application of technology aided nuclear facility engineering tools to nuclear facility engineering problems.

  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and customers during project development.

  • Seismic retrofit of existing nuclear and non-nuclear structures and systems.

  • Implement requirements in ACI, AISC, ASCE, DOE, and LANL codes and standards.

  • Develop technical reports, calculations, drawing packages, and specifications. Take ownership of project deliverables for small, mid-sized, and large projects.

  • Interface with external subconsultants and external government entities.

  • Participate in facility-wide planning and implementation of seismic guidelines.

  • Implement their understanding and capabilities for advanced modeling of structures for earthquake loadings.

  • Manage technical deliverables for all levels of projects.

  • Review technical deliverables from external subcontractors.
