Los Alamos National Laboratory IT Data Center Technologist 2/3 (R&D Technologist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The DARHT Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group within the Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division is looking for an IT Data Center Technologist. The successful candidate will work at the J-6 programmatic Data Center and will be responsible for a broad range of IT systems including Windows servers and workstations, NetApp data storage appliances, Arista and Cisco network L2-L3 switches, video camera systems and other IT related hardware. The successful candidate will deploy, monitor, maintain, and upgrade mission-critical computing resources supporting linear accelerator operations and data analysis at a Department of Energy facility conducting Stockpile Stewardship related activities.

J-6 provides excellence in accelerator research and development for x-ray flash radiography and operates both axes of the DARHT facility. J-6 is a dynamic team embarking on a new era in advanced hydrotesting through the newly developed DARHT Capability Expansion (DCX) strategy, next generation capability for DARHT and integrated weapon testing. Research Technologist 2 $92,300 - $151,000

Working as part of a team, the candidate will perform installation, maintenance, support, and administration, including but not limited to the following:

  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Windows desktop and Windows Server Operating Systems, and MSSQL Server in both physical and MS Hyper-V environments

  • Administration of SQL Servers and Databases, including troubleshooting, managing backups and recovery

  • Remediation of system vulnerabilities on Windows systems

  • Testing and evaluating commercial and Laboratory developed software for quality control and proper operation

  • Enforcing password policies, data integrity, and file system security on workstation, server, and network infrastructure

  • Researching emerging technologies, new IT trends, hardware and software tools and solutions for the benefit of the DARHT Hydrodynamic Program

  • Communicating highly technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel

  • Planning, designing, documenting, and implementing hardware and software solutions to support the Data Center and users

Research Technologist 3 $101,700 - $168,200

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:

  • Experience with end user windows deployments

  • Custom Imaging workstations/server computers to meet user needs

  • Experience with Disaster Recovery

  • Creating/Implementing or able follow disaster recovery documentation

  • Experience with Asset management

  • In a large scale IT environment

  • Experience with Software Version control

  • Mass deployments of software installs or updates

  • Experience in training personal

  • Able lead a team with various professions and experience levels

  • Experience in Datacenter level cable management

  • Work with fiber optics

  • Work with ethernet cable

  • Can produce accurate labels

  • Experience in creating/updating Vision drawings

  • Able to create visio drawing of IT infrastructure

  • Able to interpret visio drawings

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge:

  • Experience of Microsoft SQL Server

  • Experience of Microsoft Hyper-V

  • Experience of Microsoft Windows Clustering.

  • Some knowledge in programming (Python or PowerShell)

  • Knowledge of best practice security measures for IT infrastructures.

  • Extensive knowledge in Windows Server 2019 and/or virtual environments, active directory, and HyperV

  • Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task.

Communication:

  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Training/Certifications: Formal classroom or remote training in an operating system, OEM hardware, scripting language, or IT theory or concept is desirable but not required.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
