Los Alamos National Laboratory Designer/Drafter 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Design/Drafter 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapon Product Definition (W-11) group is looking for a Design/Drafter. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. They will also generate complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, tooling, equipment and/or systems. Independently defines modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolves design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing. Working knowledge of engineering concepts and basic skills in product data management and/or configuration management of part and assembly definition.

Working knowledge of industry standards such as ASME Y series design/drafting standards including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). as related to design field. Ability to perform calculations in support of unique technical problems for fit, form and function. Works independently or as part of a team.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Design/Drafting Experience: Entry-Level to Fundamental understanding of:

  • Component and tool design, fixturing, schematics, and tooling equipment

  • Machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment

  • Engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture

  • Three-dimensional parametric CAD systems and associated Product Data Management system

  • Modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent

  • Novel design solutions for unique and non-standard design challenges in either static or dynamic applications

  • Application of design limits in non- routine environments

Collaboration/Teaming: Responsible for the development and design of large projects and works directly with customer to define requirements for the design solution. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on diverse teams and collaborate on designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from senior level technicians. It is an expectation to facilitate design reviews with stakeholders, addressing compatibility between design drawings and models with other disciplines, clarifying interfaces and resolving issues.

Communication : Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively to advise engineers in dimensioning strategies.

Design/Drafter 2

At this level, in addition to what was outlined at the lower level, may be project lead on process or product design. May assign tasks to and monitor work of project progress in the group when assigned lead responsibility to support engineers in dimensioning strategies. May supervise aspects of work of others and performs own work with minimal direction. Completed work is reviewed from the expectation of professional results without appreciable direction. Involved with technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity and independence. Solutions may be original and impact the outcome of the entire project.

Education/Experience at Level 1: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 years related experience; or, and equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Level 2: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or, and equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • An Associate's of Science degree in design/drafting or engineering practices

  • Certification in Auto CAD

  • Experience with Creo Parametric 3D CAD Software and PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software

  • Experience with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants

  • Active Q clearance, or the ability to obtain a Q clearance

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
