About the Opportunity

Nuclear Power Programmes are delivering client critical works to some of our major UK and European Projects. Our embedded teams are delivering support to Hinkley Point C (New build power station in the South West), Sizewell C (located in the South East), helping develop technologies in SMR (Small modular Reactor) capability and working towards building Poland's first Nuclear Power station.

Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the SZC Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project is now seeking private investment with a view to start construction in 2024. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

We now have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental & Consents Engineer to join the SZC Project.

The Role

Construction Permitting is integral to delivery of the SZC project overall. A range of permits, consents and licenses are required for the main construction activities and for the enabling activities which precede them.

The Civil Works Programme (CWP) comprises a scope of work valued at circa £9bn (point estimate excluding Fee, Estimating Uncertainty and Risk and at 2022 prices) and this has been divided into three delivery Sub-programmes and these are as follows.

  • Enabling & Earthworks

  • Marine & Tunnelling

  • Main Civils & Ancillary Works

The Environmental and Sustainability Assurance function within the SZC’s Civil Works Programme (CWP) is the focal point within the CWP management team for the integration, coordination, and timely achievement of the necessary approvals to enable on-time delivery of the CWP.

This role will enable a key golden thread from by integrating across design teams (procured by CWP from SZC’s Design Supply Chain) through to the Clients Consenting team through to delivery undertaken by the Civil Works Alliance (CWA).

This role will also enable functional assurance, integration, interface management and technical support on environmental and sustainability matters relevant to the CWP’s programme and project management direction in regard to compliance.

Reporting to the CWP Environmental Consents and Sustainability Lead, the Environmental Consents Interface manager will manage and co-ordinate the program for delivery of the relevant work streams in support of Sizewell C obtaining construction environmental permits, consents, and licenses associated with the activities necessary to deliver CWP scope.

This post requires a high level of technical engagement between designers and contractors within the CWP, CWA and the SZC Environment Team and will also include regulatory engagement.

Reporting to the CWP Environmental Consents & Sustainability Lead, this role will co-ordinate the delivery of the relevant work streams in support of construction environmental permits, consents, and licenses.

This includes the following responsibilities:

  • Responsible for co-ordinating and informing the timed phased delivery of information required to support the permitting process (i.e., phased release of design and procurement information to enable permits to progress ‘as early as possible’ etc).

  • Responsible for the monitoring and reporting of construction environmental permits, consents and licences within the CWP.

  • Identifying risks, issues and opportunities relating to construction environmental permits, consents and licences.

  • Developing professional working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders including the CWA, Environment Teams, Planning Team, Site Construction Team, Internal Regulation, Contractors, and Regulators.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • You’ll ideally have a proven knowledge and in depth understanding of the challenges faced in construction environmental permitting in a complex engineering, major infrastructure project.

  • Previous experience in horizon scanning and overcoming challenges through innovative mitigations would be beneficial

  • You’ll have strong knowledge of environmental regulators and how they might interact on complex projects/in environmentally sensitive locations.

  • You’ll have strong project manage experience along with leadership and strong communication skills.

  • Having Previous experience in environmental / construction consenting, permitting, licensing on a complex engineering, major infrastructure projects is essential.
