For this role, we are looking for a dynamic, organized, self-starting Systems Development Director to lead our operations/engineering organization for new AWS region builds.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with AWS infrastructure and product teams to design, deliver, operate and automate utility computing services for new AWS regions. You will assess risks, anticipate issues, overcome technical obstacles, make high-judgement trade-offs, and balance business needs with technical constraints.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a deep understanding of distributed system design, delivery, operations and automation. Your development management expertise and operational excellence will influence your team’s decisions and drive secure and scalable solutions. And as an AWS leader, you will need to be passionate about innovating and iterating region build and operations models, in order to deliver great customer experiences.

Key job responsibilities

The role is the single threaded leader for Systems Development and Operations in the AWS UK region build team. The role works to set and execute the strategic vision for operations teams in collaboration with product, sales, security and service teams. The role requires a detailed understanding and ability to drive critical aspects of operations. The leader in this role should be customer obsessed, with ability to balance long-term vision with near-term customer needs. The role will lead strategic initiatives and provide support to operations and development teams in the UK.

Basic Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field

• Substantial experience building and leading engineering teams that design and deliver large-scale distributed systems

• Experience in software development, systems engineering and automation, under UNIX/Linux

• Demonstrated ability to hire and retain top performers, and lead a high performing team

• Decisive, confident, and experienced with influencing others

• Proven coaching and leadership skills including evidence of successful succession planning

• Strong communication and negotiation skills, demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with multiple teams and stakeholders

• Ability to work at all levels in the organisation

• Experience delivering successfully, at pace

Preferred Qualifications

• MS/PhD degree in Computer Science

• Experience managing engineering teams

• Experience of problem-solving, debugging and large-scale event management, with customer-facing services

• Successful track record in working on large cross-functional, cross-organisational transformation efforts

• Experience working as part of a global team, across multiple time zones
