Argonne National Laboratory Worker Safety and Environment Division Director in Lemont, Illinois

The Worker, Safety, and Environment (WSE) Division Director reports to the Sr. Director of Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) directorate and is responsible for managing the WSE division to support the Laboratory’s mission and enable exemplary safety performance aligned with the Laboratory’s strategic plan.

The WSE DD will provide leadership and a vision for the division, and as a member of the broader ESH leadership team, while establishing and leading a highly visible laboratory-wide integrated program of standards, procedures, policies, best practices, and management systems that encompass integrated safety management. The WSE DD also acts as a strategic partner to enable and assist laboratory line management in full implementation of ESH programs to ensure research is conducted safely. This role also provides direct management and supervision to the following groups: Environmental Programs, Occupational Health and Safety Programs and Deployed Safety Services Program.

Other key responsibilities include:

  • A key focus is on leading worker safety and environment programs, including environmental protection, safety training, and the functional areas as designated by 10 CFR 851, Worker Safety and Health Program: service subcontractor safety, firearms safety, explosives safety, pressure safety, electrical safety, industrial hygiene, biological safety, motor vehicle safety, chemical safety, and chronic beryllium disease prevention.

  • Develop mitigation plans to minimize risk of injuries or accidents, perform risk assessments, and assess effectiveness of safety programs.

  • Enable and foster a proactive and integrated safety culture that promotes safety improvement based on safety observations, assessments, open line feedback, risk reviews, trend analysis, metrics, and data to mitigate risk and identify hazards.

  • Lead the laboratory in the development, implementation, execution and continuous improvement of effective environmental safety and health programs and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Provide support to the ESH Sr. Director in the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies, and operational responsibilities. 

  • Develop creative and innovative safety solutions within rules and regulations for emerging and new areas of research.

Position Requirements

Required knowledge, skills, and experience:

Leadership:

  • Comprehensive leadership and management skills necessary to define and implement the Laboratory’s strategic program and services.

  • Experience in management of multidisciplinary activities, including the ability to develop strategies to attract, develop and retain a high-performing, diverse staff.

  • Skill in building and sustaining consensus and collaboration among key stakeholders across the Laboratory complex including Executive and Senior Leaders.

  • Ability to drive change, including cultural impact.

  • Effective skill and approach to communicating issues with senior leadership and management to devise responsive, efficient business solutions to program-critical tasks, including demonstrated ability to present complex issues in clear, concise terms.

Technical:

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in safety, science, engineering, or related field, and 10+ years of experience in the safety field, including supervisory roles and responsibilities.

  • Technical skills in at least one of the following functional areas: safety and health, occupational safety, and occupational health program development, maintenance, and implementation.

  • Knowledge of environmental rules and regulations.

  • Clear understanding of OSHA regulations and knowledge of 10 C.F.R. 851, Worker, Safety and Health Programs.

Operational excellence:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work within regulatory guidelines, with internal and external contacts of varying level of expertise and authority, and to achieve assigned goals to the benefit of the organization and the Laboratory.

  • Ability to prioritize, plan, and deliver workflow in a time-sensitive environment, while maintaining the ability to remain flexible and adjust to changing situations.

  • Ability to resolve matters involving competing interests and goals of multiple constituencies.

  • Budget manager and steward of Lab resources.

  • Passion for the mission of the Lab.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
