Argonne National Laboratory Principal Energy Systems Scientist in Lemont, Illinois

The Advanced Grid Modeling group within the Center for Energy, Environmental, and Economic Systems Analysis (CEEESA) is seeking to hire an engineer to conduct research on electric power systems planning, operations, and control. CEEESA is a research center within the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis division, which is a part of the Advanced Energy Technologies directorate of Argonne National Laboratory.

The candidate will apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts for conducting research and development in finding solutions for the problems faced by the energy and power sector. The candidate will lead and work on complex technical problems and develop novel and innovative solutions. Technology leadership responsibilities include planning and leading research and development programs that include the development and application of computational simulation tools to evaluate and analyze energy technologies and energy supply and demand systems from the perspective of cost and performance, end-use requirements, environmental impacts, and socioeconomic issues. The candidate will also create, develop, and sustain research programs and attract funding in these areas. The candidate will recruit, mentor, and train the next generation workforce while maintaining Argonne’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) goals.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of electric power systems, electricity markets, and issues related to the integration of variable renewables, energy storage, distributed energy resources, and demand-side technologies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of power systems planning, operation and control, dynamic and control theories (including distribution and transmission systems).

  • Problem-solving skills and a passion for innovative solutions. Experience with computational approaches to solve energy power system problems.

  • Well-versed with power system software, such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSSE/PSLF, EMTP/ATP, CYME, OpenDSS, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, etc.

  • Proven leadership and project management experience. Ability to create, develop and sustain research programs with experience in attracting and managing sponsor funding for complex multidisciplinary research operations.

  • Experience working and collaborating with the electric power industry organizations such as electric utilities, electricity market operators, etc.

  • Experience working with various sponsoring agencies such as DOE and DHS, and with the private sector.

  • Experience of working in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment. Ability to work with other groups and divisions within Argonne and with external partners such as other national labs, universities, and industry.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in recruiting and mentoring junior-level staff.

  • Skilled communication skills, verbal and written, and ability to interact with Argonne’s leadership and project sponsors.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • Minimum qualifications include the following education and professional experience combinations with degree(s) in Electrical Engineering or related field(s):

  • PhD and 6+ years of experience

  • Master of Science and 7+ years of experience

  • Bachelor of Science and 12+ years of experience
