Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Radium EDM in Lemont, Illinois

The Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites interested applicants to apply for a postdoctoral position to conduct experimental Fundamental Symmetries research at the intersection of nuclear and atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics. The successful candidate will play a significant role in the experimental search for the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the radium-225 atom. The focus of this position is to implement improvements to the experimental systems for laser cooling, trapping, and detection of radium atoms and to perform an improved measurement of the EDM of radium-225.

The Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an active and broad-ranging research program in fundamental symmetries including: a search for the proton’s EDM leveraging the strong enhancement of the observable signal in TlF molecules (CENTREX), measurements of parity violating nuclear anapole moments (ZOMBIES), a “beyond ton-scale” search for neutrino-less double beta decay using a high pressure xenon time projection chamber (NEXT), and precision measurements of beta-decay correlations based on trapped atoms and ions.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in atomic, molecular, and optical physics, nuclear physics, or a related field. Received within the last 3 years or upcoming year

  • Experience working with lasers and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chambers.

  • Experience designing and building experimental control and data acquisition systems.

  • Strong background in laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms, ultra-cold quantum gases, precision measurement or a related research area is preferred.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

The initial term for this position is 1 year and can be renewed annually for up to 3 years, dependent upon funding and performance.

Questions about the position should be directed to Michael Bishof ( bishof@anl.gov ) Please note that only applications through Argonne website will be considered.

Applications must include an updated CV, a brief statement of research interests and three letters of recommendation

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt of required materials and the position will remain open until filled.
