Argonne National Laboratory Postdoctoral Appointee - Interfacial Processes Group in Lemont, Illinois

The Interfacial Processes Group in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to conduct experimental research to attain a fundamental understanding of chemical processes that control the structures and reactivities of mineral-water interfaces.

Under the guidance of a supervisor, the postdoctoral appointee will:

Apply in-situ measurements to understand interfacial processes including adsorption and desorption of ions and heterogeneous nucleation and growth of secondary phases

  • Initial work will focus on characterization of geo-materials’ interfaces and their evolution during reaction in aqueous solutions using optical, atomic force, and digital holographic microscopies

  • Dynamically evolving interfacial structures will be observed using in-situ synchrotron-based surface scattering techniques (at APS-U and other synchrotrons)

Collaborate with partner researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory who will provide the results from both computational and other experimental studies of the same or similar systems. Plan and conduct research while adhering to Laboratory and Divisional Environmental, Safety, Health/Quality Assurance practices and policies. Analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, presents papers at scientific meetings, and prepares reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings or meeting sponsor reporting requirements.

This position may require travel to work at out-of-state synchrotron facilities when required.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in chemistry, geology, materials science, or a related field

  • Knowledge of and experience in the field of low-temperature geochemistry and mineralogy

  • Knowledge of and experience in the state-of-the-art microscopies (such as atomic force microscopy or digital holographic microscopy) and synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in general analytical methods and practices

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated creative and proactive approach towards scientific problem solving

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in a multidisciplinary team
