Job Description

 

General Purpose of Job:  

Manages Radiation Safety Program for Sparrow Health System.   Oversees licensing and the use of radioactive materials, nuclear medicine services and radiation oncology service, and the use of x-ray devices and non-ionizing radiation.  Must fulfill training and experience requirements specified by Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), including appropriate training and experience or board certification. Must have a thorough knowledge of NRC regulations.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis.  Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader.  Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

 

  • Manages radiation safety services for large diagnostic radiology, cardiology, and other medical services, oversees dosimetry services and general radiation safety training.
  • Advises the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and any subcommittees on the design and management of the radiation safety program which includes establishing, maintaining and auditing policies and procedures.
  • Ensures radiation is used safely in accordance with approved policies and procedures and with regulatory and accreditation requirements so that the program adequately protects radiation workers, patients, ancillary personnel, visitors and the public.
  • Oversees training for personnel exposed to ionizing radiation in their training or work.
  • Coordinates radiation safety evaluations, surveys and reviews.
  • Interfaces, as needed, with all Sparrow Safety Committees.
  • Contributes expertise in the planning of new or remodeled facilities to ensure adequate shielding, exhaust and effluent of radioactive material and management of decommissioning where applicable.
  • Evaluates, develops and establishes safety programs for non-ionizing radiation sources, e.g., laser safety, UV safety, etc.
  • Be aware of all locations of ionizing radiation use. Reviews personnel radiation monitoring program. Familiar with pediatric dose reduction methods. Familiar with patient shielding policies. Confirm that all ionizing imaging equipment is tested in accordance with regulations and accreditation requirements.  Confirm all ionizing equipment QA is documented and necessary corrections are completed.  Confirm all rooms have shielding plans on file.  Ensure required training is completed for personnel engaged in fluoroscopic or ionizing equipment.
  • This position will manage action levels, enforce ALARA requirements, audit/review reports, manager spill responses, maintain a current license, and maintain current machine registrations.

• Has written attestation to have successfully completed training in Radiation Safety, regulatory issues, and emergency procedures for radiation safety within six months of hire.
