Job Overview:

The HSE Engineer applies their conceptual knowledge of HSE Engineering and with a moderate level of guidance and direction from colleagues and leadership, is responsible for solving a range of straightforward HSE engineering problems. They will be responsible for analyzing possible solutions using standard procedures, as well as building knowledge of the company, processes, and customers. The HSE Engineer understands key business drivers and applies this knowledge to solve problems in straightforward situations through analysis of possible solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Perform FEED, Studies, and detailed design engineering, analysis, and calculations on more complex and demanding engineering tasks

  • Apply knowledge and skills to complete varied assignments

  • Prepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and procedures

  • Prioritize and organize own work to meet deadlines

  • Focus on completing work within budgets

  • Clearly communicate and explain information in straightforward engineering activities

  • Technical Safety:

  • Perform consequence modeling using PHAST, fire and risk assessment, flare stack assessment, process vent dispersion analysis, and other modeling applications

  • Perform firewater demand and hydraulics calculation using PIPENET software; develop firewater distribution and deluge system P&IDs

  • Develop fire and gas detector layouts and fire alarm specifications

  • Prepare safety equipment lists; prepare safety and firefighting equipment specifications and data sheets; develop safety and fire protection layout drawings

  • Prepare a clear and accurate summary of modeling analyses and calculations; prepare quality technical reports

  • Develop and prepare study materials and documents for quantitative risk assessment (QRA) studies

  • Apply knowledge and skills to complete varied assignments

  • Safety Workshops:

  • Develop scope of PHA/LOPA for subcontract work

  • Manage and coordinate preparations for PHA/ LOPA studies

  • Manage PHA/LOPA action items documentation and resolution records

  • Develop a safety instrumented function (SIF) summary based on PHA/LOPA study results

  • Project Support:

  • Develop an understanding of the project schedule to prioritize and organize activities

  • Interacts and communicates with other engineering disciplines

  • Apply knowledge and skills to support project needs, such as ad hoc technical safety modeling analyses and calculations

  • Recognize changes to scope and notify the project Lead Process, Engineer

Reports to: Project: Lead Engineer

Functional: Department Manager

Liaise with: All design/drafting disciplines, all Engineering disciplines, Fabrication groups, and Document Control

Supervises: Trainee Engineers

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in fire protection, chemical engineering, or related field (Master’s Degree preferred)

  • 3-7 years of experience

  • P.E. certificate of registration

  • PHA Leadership Training

  • Functional Safety Training

  • Experience in oil & gas and/or petrochemical industry

  • Familiar with NFPA, API, and other industry codes and standards

  • Proficient in MS Office suite of software

  • Self-starter and ability to work independently

  • Relates well to all levels and kinds of people

  • Fluent verbal and written English communication skills
