Project Overview:

This position is in a remote location in the Northern Territory and involves overseeing contractors undertaking multi-discipline works including earthworks, steel & poly piping, various mechanical works, pump installations/removals, structural steel infrastructure demolition & concrete demolition. It is a fly in/fly out roster out roster to Darwin with a bus ride from there to the site.

Job Summary:

The Superintendent Structural Mechanical Piping (SMP)/ Demolition is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the area assigned. It includes directing the SMP contractors and subcontractors, subordinate supervisors and others, as assigned. The candidate will be accountable for the daily management of construction, site administration, and undertaking overview and control of all safety, quality, progress, schedule and cost controls.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for safety on the project. This includes safety orientation, preparation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings.

  • Writing scope of work documents for packages of work to be awarded to sub-contractors.

  • Inspect site for unsafe conditions and practices and take appropriate corrective action to correct breaches.

  • Champion the cause of ZERO Accident Philosophy. Ensure that Bechtel and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility.

  • Responsible for supervising and directing contractor(s) in a superintendent capacity within the SMP disciplines.

  • Ensure the most current design documents are provided to subcontractor to complete work, and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.

  • Monitor the activities of subcontractors to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.

  • Responsible for the cost, schedule and optimization of craft labour and maintaining the four-week look ahead schedule for labour and equipment.

  • Responsible for implementing corporate project policies, procedures and instructions within assigned SMP operations.

  • Coordinate established area operational plans.

  • Lead the preparation of the look ahead schedule and budget control with assistance from Project Controls.

  • Provide input to quantity tracking application and report weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.

  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.

  • Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate personnel.

  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management such as back-to-back coverage with other Superintendents.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • The requisite level of capability is normally acquired through a minimum of 15 years in demonstrated capacity along with a recognized technical degree or certification or recognised prior practical work experience in construction.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of close client secondment interaction, EPCM contract Management, and the Contractor(s) and their subcontractor’s responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of construction technologies & supervisory functions relating to field activities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H). Demonstrable commitment to a Zero Accident safety program or similar.

  • Extensive experience in construction of large projects, and able to undertake and administer small to medium capital projects.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

  • Trade background desirable and experience in cross supervision highly advantageous.

  • Proven customer relationship skills are essential.
