Flynn Restaurant Group Payroll Supervisor in Independence, Ohio

Position Description

The Payroll Supervisor oversees a team responsible for payroll and garnishment processing for our operating divisions approximately 20,000+ employees in over 500+ units) across the United States. An extensive understanding of the payroll process with a sizeable multistate background is critical to this role's success. The role also entails managing the team's day-to-day responsibilities.

The Payroll Supervisor ensures the development, discipline, and motivation for their time. The Payroll Supervisor's primary role is to ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll in SAP. The Payroll Supervisor is responsible for ensuring payroll policies and procedures comply with all applicable state and federal legislation. A successful Payroll Supervisor possesses strong communication skills and an aptitude for sharing knowledge. They will work closely with HR, Accounting, and other Business Partners as needed. Further, the incumbent must provide the highest level of confidentiality and customer service to all employees across all organizational levels.

Essential responsibilities will include:

  • Supervision of the timely and accurate processing of company payroll.

  • Supervision of all payroll processes, including but not limited to, wage garnishments, payroll adjustments, direct deposit reissues, auditing, and analysis of payroll.

  • Review and approve each assigned payroll area.

  • Cover for team members in a back-up role for vacation or high-volume work efforts.

  • Running the payroll process from time imports through the general ledger and tax file creation as needed.

  • Assist Market Accountants with researching month-end payroll discrepancies as needed.

  • Maintain awareness of state unclaimed property laws and policy changes that might impact payroll.

  • Engage business partners/departments in unclaimed property compliance activities with research and knowledge sharing as needed.

  • Support unclaimed property activities such as audits, the reissue of property and due diligence letters, and other projects as needed.

  • Serving as a liaison to Operations/field employees to resolve payroll-related issues.

  • Encourage and implement continuous improvement measures within payroll.

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of payroll processes, procedures, and controls.

  • Researching and preparing special reports and analytics as needed for management.

  • Maintain payroll data, including retro pay, W-4 validation at federal, state, and local levels, garnishment entry, and other various payroll duties.

Team management:

  • Develop, maintain, motivate, discipline, communicating job expectations, and articulate an organizational culture consistent with company mission and values.

  • Train new hires and provide on-going mentoring of the payroll process and laws to existing payroll team employees.

  • Ensure team is staffed to accommodate weekly workloads and markets are allocated, according to expertise and capacity

  • Assist with running and coordinating team meetings and training, including setting agenda, recording minutes, and distributing follow up actions.

  • Team absence management.

  • Work with the Payroll Manager to set staff development objectives and ensure the payroll team is relieved to participate in training and development activities.

  • Escalate performance and behavioral issues to Payroll Manager.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • The desire to oversee work performed by others, including providing training and mentoring as needed.

  • At least three-plus years of supervising experience preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience in a high volume (3,000 plus employees) fast-paced payroll department.

  • Ability to audit various payroll functions.

  • Excellent time management, delegation, and organizational skills

  • Accounting background a plus.

  • Proven track record of employee development

  • Comfortable handling confidential information. Must be discreet, tactful, and mature.

  • Excellent customer service, collaboration, and interaction skills.

  • Position requires obtaining results quickly in the face of conflicting priorities while maintaining a positive relationship with the customer.

  • Proficient in Windows-based word processing and spreadsheet software

  • Familiarity with SAP or other ERP (Oracle, PeopleSoft, Lawson) payroll a plus.
