About the Role

You’d be part of the Architecture Engineering team that set modern architecture principles to promote innovation, flexibility, and reuse. This is a critical leadership role in our journey to modernize ways of working, move to cloud, deploy modular tech architectures/platforms, drive automation, digitize employee and customer experiences and deliver insights from data. As part of the HDC India team this role would lead our team of engineers and deliver on our platform Engineering strategy at Gap Inc. This role provides a unique combination of functional and technical expertise as well as architecture experience across all enterprise systems, to design and build our Engineering platform solutions that meets the business needs and are aligned with our Technology Vision. The incumbent will work closely with stakeholders across the business as well as partner with technology product teams to understand business and system requirements and provide a critical link between the functional and delivery team to ensure a complete and cohesive solution. Incumbent will also provide day to day people leadership to the teams at our development centre focusing on engagement and development of our talent.

This role focus will be to get alignment of platforms under one product line that enable developers to build, ship, and observe applications, alongside how we intelligently schedule these workloads, together with the Engineering Enablement team, Continuous Delivery Platform, and other peripheral partners, means that we have a need to define a director role capable of leading this unified team. The unique arrangement of the full pipeline, from local development, all the way to shipping and scheduling workloads means we need a leader who possesses the knowledge and understanding of various customer's needs, most importantly the needs of the developer, end to end.

What You'll Do

· Immersed understanding and experience of entire developer pipeline from local development to shipping and scheduling workloads

· A clear understanding of modernizing ways of shipping from last gen approaches to immutable and approaches:

  • Understanding and ability to deliver immutable infrastructure approach across the entire pipeline

  • Understanding and ability to deliver a single continuous integration and continuous delivery pipeline for the 3 major workload categories: bespoke/legacy VMs, containers/k8s, and functions (FaaS)

  • Understanding and ability to implement modern, centralized, git-based continuous integration services (e.g. Drone, Vela, GitHub Actions, etc.)

  • Understanding of the scope and needs to build a single base image bakery team, process, and APIs needed

  • Understanding and ability to build a bottom-up driven mob + a small team to groom and maintain an opinionated base starter app framework for most workloads to reuse

  • Understanding and ability to weave in common observability, security, and other platforms to the pipeline and base starter-app framework: metrics, logging, tracing, DAST, SAST, secrets management, API Platform sidecars, etc.

  • Clear understanding of how to deliver a runtime platform completely decoupled from the underlying infrastructure of compute, networking, storage, etc. (e.g. a developer never has to log into and configure things in Azure or any specific infrastructure provider, be it our own infrastructure OR cloud providers)

· Demonstrates clear understanding of GapTech’s constraints of frugality for when to purchase a technical capability vs building one, with a clear demonstrated ability to deliver frugal open source based or in-house assembled technical capabilities when that is the approach to pursue.

· Demonstrates a level of experience and understanding brought to the role that does not have strong dependency on a need for external consulting for how to move forward on providing a technical capability

· Strong understanding of the observability primitives and ability build and host them

  • Ability to deliver, build a team, and provide a common carrier service for metrics

  • Ability to deliver, build a team, and provide a common carrier service for logging

  • Ability to deliver, build a team, and provide a common carrier service for tracing

  • Understanding and ability to decouple application teams from having to instrument everything below application measurements

· A strong bias for action, a crawl/walkun approach, and a learn-and-iterate-by-doing approach to improvement

· Having a growth mindset and a strong background in the area of technology architecture and engineering.

Who You Are

  • Education: Bachelor's or master's in computer science or equivalent

  • Experience: Minimum of 15 years experiences in IT strategy, architecture, and infrastructure, with at least 8 years' experience in managing and building up team.

  • Experience with Enterprise Architecture Review & Governance, enterprise technology buying and evaluation process

  • Experience in building, architecting, designing, and implementing highly distributed systems

  • Proven track record of designing and implementing digital technology solutions around E-commerce, Customer, Supply Chain, HR, Finance

  • Experience with Agile delivery and DevOps processes

  • Create, evaluate, and implement high-level plans and design proposals for IT solutions and ensure performance tuning and scalability

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and digital trends in retail industry

  • Team and budget management in terms of strategy, roadmap, performance reviews and developments
