MD Anderson Cancer Center Principal Research Scientist Hematopoietic Biology & Malignancy - Dr. Rafael Casellas' Lab in Houston, Texas

The primary purpose of the Principal Research Scientist position is to provide leadership and support for major initiatives related to basic research, including design, development and implementation of experiments and projects.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Program/Project Management: Direct basic and translational projects within the laboratory of Dr. Rafael Casellas in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology and Malignancy. Lead strategic planning for in vitro research experiments (primarily) and participate in design of in vivo experiments (secondarily) in a multidisciplinary setting and help direct the development of immunotherapies. Provide expert technical guidance for NanoCAR T cell development, set up, and troubleshooting to postdoctoral fellows and students on project/task groups. Responsible for driving biopanning experiments and supervision of research activities for postdocs and students. Approach problems with curiosity and open-mindedness; notice current processes/products needing improvement and generate new options using own technical expertise. Ensure scientific excellence, quality, and completeness of all programs in a timely manner.

Research Design: Design, oversee, and perform pertinent, primarily in vitro, research experiments. Responsible for laboratory ("bench") experiments as they relate to ongoing research projects - specifically those projects involving proteins and/or antibodies of interest, cellular biology and immunology studies. Carry out extensive scientific analyses related to experimental data and use the results of the analyses to plan subsequent key experiments.

Scientific Oversight: Design, perform and oversee complex basic and translational research experiments and acquisition/analysis of its data, primarily in vitro projects. Other duties as assigned. Presents findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares scientific documents for publication.

EDUCATION:

Required: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Five years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred: At least 10 years of relevant experience in a basic research environment.
