Functional Description:

Within the Global Risk & Compliance organization, the Market Risk Oversight Group is the independent risk management team covering all financial risks undertaken by the Treasury function at American Express. The team’s core responsibility is to design and execute risk measurement and controls across balance sheet management areas, including funding and liquidity risk, market risk, and capital management. The role will assume the responsibility of overseeing key areas in funding and liquidity risk management, leveraging analytical frameworks for independent risk assessment and providing effective challenge to funding and liquidity risk management processes.

This role will report to the Manager/Senior Manager, Funding and Liquidity Risk Oversight, and will be responsible for developing and monitoring risk metrics, conducting in-depth reviews of funding and liquidity risk processes, ensuring compliance with regulations and internal policies, managing relationships with first line partners, assisting in regulatory interactions, and enhancing the firm’s funding and liquidity risk program as American Express’s balance sheet grows.

Responsibilities

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative Country Risk assessment to monitor the economic and political state of ‘in-scope’ countries with focus on major macroeconomic indicators.

  • Implement and develop a framework for country risk measurement. While challenging the existing methodologies and practices.

  • Prepare monthly dashboards and presentation material for senior committee members and country risk managers.

  • Engage in development/calibration of Risk Limits and Thresholds.

  • Identify new and emerging country risks while also developing early warning tools for identification of potential country risk concerns.

  • Track key macroeconomic indicators throughout the month to escalate any potential signs of stress.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in treasury, risk management or research functions highly preferred.

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field, is required; graduate degree is a plus.

  • Strong verbal and written communications required.

  • Ability to analyze a country’s macroeconomic indicators like, GDP growth, central bank interest rates, balance of trade, FX etc.

  • Ability to effectively deliver complex messages to senior leaders and stakeholders across three lines of defense.

  • Ability to think critically and independently, devote significant attention to details, remain highly organized.

  • Proactive in identifying issues, delivering and escalating key findings, and advising on recommended solutions to mitigate risks.

  • Self-motivated, results-oriented with a dedication to meeting deadlines for key milestones.

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel required, working knowledge of Bloomberg or any other market data/research tool highly preferred. Proficiency with Powerpoint, SQL, Python preferred.

  • CFA or FRM exam pass is a plus.
