This position serves in the integrated Pest Management Program in the department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design at NCA &T. The successful applicant will support research efforts within a multi-disciplinary funded project on small farm resilience using indigenous and niche vegetables.
In this position, the incumbent will be involved in conducting research focused on agronomic, insect pest nutritional ecology and pest management. The goal of the research program is to develop vegetable production systems that will enable us to understand the behavioral and ecological dynamics underlying the production, health benefits and profitability relationships in the context of sustainable food production to improve food security and wellbeing in the context of climate change.
The research Specialist position duties include planning, designing and conducting laboratory, greenhouse and field experiments, analyzing and interpreting data collected, and reporting the findings from the various studies. The incumbent will assist in publishing results in peer-reviewed journals and in proposal development for external funding, and supervision of project staff and students.
The incumbent will participate in extension activities and attend workshops, scientific meetings and conferences to present project work. Other responsibilities include supervising and assisting students in their research projects and in training students and personnel on insect rearing and other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
To assist with the design and implementation of experiments, carry out outlined scientific procedures and techniques, will have strong analytical and technical skills such as equipment calibration, operation of various instrumentation (e g soil moisture sensors, olfactometer, Noldus video system, chlorophyll monitor, growth chamber operation, etc.), and strong computer skills.

Through our Agricultural Research Program and our Cooperative Extension Program, we are able to research issues of importance to North Carolina and also provide research-based outreach training to citizens across the state and around the world.
Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate (Master of Science) degree experience required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant recent (PhD) degree with demonstrable high quality research experience with publications and professional presentations, and relevant supervision experience in substitution.

This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
