Position Summary

The HELP PAIN lab (directed by Natoshia R. Cunningham, PhD) at Michigan State University is recruiting one postdoctoral research associate (50% effort) in pediatric pain research starting in 2024. An anticipated start date is in summer/ fall of 2024, and this is flexible. A two-year commitment is preferred. We are looking for a candidate with strong research background in the assessment and/or nonpharmacologic treatment of pediatric pain conditions and mental health comorbidities. Interest in implementation of nonpharmacologic pain management methods (e.g., in healthcare settings, school settings, or communities with limited access to behavioral healthcare) is preferred.

The primary project is a multi-site implementation trial funded by the Department of Defense to train integrated medical care providers to implement cognitive behavioral strategies to manage mood, fatigue and pain in individuals with childhood-onset lupus. There will also be opportunities to be involved in other pediatric chronic pain research projects, which may include training school providers (including school nurses and mental health professionals) in nonpharmacologic pediatric pain management strategies, addressing adverse childhood events in the context of pediatric chronic painful conditions, addressing mental health in pediatric rheumatology settings, and understanding biomarkers of pediatric chronic pain, depending on the fellows’ interests and career goals.

For the primary project, the research associate will be responsible for helping train professionals including medical providers (e.g., nurses, medical assistants) and mental health specialists (e.g., social workers, psychologists) to serve as mental health champions on their respective medical teams. Site visits (2-4 annually), where the research associate conducts a full day of training, are an anticipated component of this role. The research associate would also be expected to participate in other research activities including data analysis, manuscript preparation, and attending/ presenting at scientific conferences.
