Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in basic science or equivalent and 2 years of related experience or Master's degree in basic science or equivalent and no experience required.

Job Summary:

Performs a variety of routine and non-routine research assignments and experiments and assists with lab maintenance responsibilities. The Research Associate II performs a variety of routine and non-routine research assignments, providing direct assistance to the principal investigator with experiments. This position entails studying the genetic variation and innate immunity of coronaviruses, including common cold coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Responsibilities will involve the maintenance and infection of mammalian cell lines, as well as assisting the principal investigator with molecular biology assays such as cloning, PCR, and western blotting. Opportunities to work in higher containment levels (BSL3) are available once proficiency at BSL2 is demonstrated. In addition to research-related tasks, responsibilities will include ordering supplies, preparing reagents, and maintaining laboratory cleanliness.

The Research Associate II will work in a laboratory dedicated to advancing our understanding of coronavirus biology and its interaction with innate immunity. The Research Associate II will contribute to ongoing research projects aimed at elucidating the genetic variations and immune responses of coronaviruses. Our lab has a strong publication record, and as a Research Associate II, you will have the opportunity to contribute as an author to scientific publications, enhancing your professional profile.

Job Duties:

  • Under general supervision, perform a standard set of research techniques. Potential techniques include virus infections, focus forming assays, plasmid cloning, sanger sequencing, RT-qPCR, and Western blotting.

  • Independently maintain mammalian cell lines in tissue culture and perform cell culture splitting for experimental purposes.

  • Set up and independently conduct experiments following detailed technical instructions.

  • Prepare biological assays and conduct basic quantitative and qualitative analysis.

  • Maintain accurate records of all tests performed and collect data, providing preliminary analysis.

  • Adhere to internal controls established for the department.

  • Fulfill any additional duties as required.

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and work well both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in culturing mammalian cells is preferred.

  • Familiarity with molecular biology techniques such as RT-qPCR, Western blotting, and cloning is preferred, but not required.

  • Experience in virology is not required.

Salary Range:

Actual salary commensurate with experience.
