Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The Tree Equity Specialist is a staff member of the Communications and Communities Division of the Colorado State Forest Service. The administration of UCF programs is carried out under the direction of the UCF Manager and the Associate Director of Communications and Communities.

Position Summary

The Tree Equity Specialist is responsible for encouraging and assisting organizations, municipalities and neighborhoods in utilizing urban forestry grants through the Colorado State Forest Service ( CSFS ) to increase tree canopy cover in communities that have historic environmental justice disparities. The Tree Equity Specialist is also responsible for professional functions and technical expertise supporting CSFS field offices in delivering urban and community forestry programs specific to areas classified as disproportionately impacted throughout all of Colorado’s communities.

Ongoing duties include assisting with community forestry projects (tree planting, inventory, canopy assessment, risk assessment, etc.), conducting trainings and workshops with professionals and community members, meeting with city councils and county governments as an advocate for community forestry, coordinating and participating in regional and national community forestry forums, attending and speaking at conferences, and administering grants and contracts. This position supports key working relationships with federal, state, college, municipal and nonprofit partners. Some examples are the United States Forest Service, CSU Extension and the International Society of Arboriculture.

This position requires proficiency in program delivery including but not limited to: administering CSFS urban forestry grants, recording accomplishments, completing required reports, meeting deadlines, managing budgets, ensuring grant requirements are met, and supporting field operations. The Tree Equity Specialist must be proactive and accelerated in program development due to federal deadlines associated with urban forestry funding received by the CSFS .

Daily activities include supporting grant awardees in overseeing grant administration, gathering and analyzing data and metrics, writing reports, assisting CSFS field offices with program implementation and coordination, and assisting the UCF Program Manager and Associate Director of Communications and Communities with other special projects as they arise.

Applicants are expected to possess demonstrated knowledge of and relevant ability with culturally diverse communities among potential target and constituent populations

Required Job Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in forestry, natural resources, environmental sciences, landscape architecture or a related program of study

  • Four years of professional forestry or arboriculture experience, with specific experience in urban and community forestry

  • Successful applicants must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the position start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States before the employment start date; Colorado State Forest Service will not sponsor a visa for this position

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Proven ability to work with diverse organizations, community groups and nonprofits in developing urban and community forestry initiatives, programs and projects

  • Experience working with disproportionately impacted communities or disadvantaged populations

  • Ability to work collaboratively and advance outcomes with internal staff and external partners and cooperators

  • Capable of documenting accomplishments, record-keeping, managing budgets and ranking, reviewing and managing forestry-related grant programs

  • Experience in preparing contracts and agreements for forest management work

  • Experience in organizing, developing and delivering public presentations, workshops, events, publications, and other informational and educational activities

  • Current International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist credential

  • Commitment to safety, quality, professionalism and excellent customer service

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

  • Basic knowledge of western United States forestry

  • Familiarity with desktop and online GIS and Microsoft Office products and apps

  • Familiarity with spoken Spanish and ability to understand and communicate with Spanish speaking community members

  • Oversee the grants for culturally and historically sensitive UCF programs including applications, advisory panels, award notifications, awardee support, etc.

  • Work alongside neighborhood, local, state, regional and federal partners in the delivery of UCF programs.

  • Collaborate on budget development for the UCF program, including new grant proposals and ongoing grants.

  • Monitor target accomplishments and ensure accomplishment reports are completed.

  • Organize and deliver workshops to professionals and community members concerning DI neighborhood programs.
