Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. It is the mission of the Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories system to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Diagnostic Lab will strive to meet the goal of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences and the University through research to develop novel approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.

Position Summary

This position will provide sample preparation and tissue trimming technical services to Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories ( VDL ). This position is responsible for handling and processing biological samples and paperwork for diagnostic cases, and will work in coordination with pathologists, microbiologists, and residents to appropriately process cases. This position will be expected to provide exceptional service to VDL clientele.

The applicant should be responsible and able to work in a team environment. This is an essential position, and the employee is required to report to work, without delay, on all/most weather closure days and various holidays throughout the year. This position will be required to report to work for emergency disease response requests and may be required to work significant hours (exceeding 40 hours per week) during a disease outbreak detection and response effort, export testing effort, or other important diagnostic effort.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

A signing bonus and/or moving expenses may be considered for eligible and successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in a related field such as biology, microbiology, veterinary technology, or other related field.

  • SUBSTITUTION :A High School Diploma plus two years of relevant laboratory experience may be substituted for the Associate’s degree.

Essential Duties

Job Duty CategorySpecimen Evaluation and Trimming of Diagnostic Samples

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position will evaluate submitted diagnostic biopsy and necropsy cases and appropriately process cases for further laboratory diagnostics. This position will review the case and assess how to properly prepare and trim the tissues, using appropriate techniques, for diagnostic histopathology.

  • This process includes inking, photographing, recording measurements and trimming samples submitted and placing tissues in correct cassettes. Documentation of procedures and processes used are required and are used to inform the Veterinary Pathologist reading the finished histopathology slides, to aid in accurate diagnosis.

  • Correct trimming of tissues is the first step in biopsy testing and is essential to the process. After trimming in the Tissue Trimming Lab, the are submitted in cassettes to the Histology Lab for further processing and staining, then they are provided to the Veterinary Pathologist for interpretation and diagnosis.

  • This position will assign cases to Veterinary Pathologists and assign the number of cassettes needed for each case, ensure the correct information is added in the USALIMS program and appropriately label all associated forms.

  • Ability to keep samples and paperwork organized and following laboratory workflows is essential. This section receives a high volume of samples and accuracy of documentation and attention to detail is a must.

  • This position will evaluate cases submitted by Veterinarians for sample evaluation. This entails reading and evaluating the case history provided and general testing requests describe on the submission.

  • This position will determine which samples should be selected for testing and prepare those samples for testing. Some cases are submitted without test requests and this position will evaluate testing needs and consult with a Veterinary Pathologist, as needed, to determine appropriate tests to request.

Duty/Responsibility

This position will be expected to perform general laboratory duties to maintain the laboratory and maintain the archive of samples in the laboratory. Responsibilities include:

  • Proper disposal of fixed, frozen and fresh tissues

  • Maintaining the formalin supplies cabinet

  • Maintaining supplies inventory

  • Preparing and transferring fixed tissues to long term archival storage

  • Maintaining the archival storage, including maintenance of the archival inventory

  • Maintaining laboratory equipment, including cassette labelers, trimming hoods and associated IT equipment and sample/archive refrigerators and freezers

  • Preparing chemicals and following CSU hazardous materials regulations

  • Maintaining chemical storage and proper disposal of all chemicals

  • Keeping the laboratory clean

Duty/Responsibility

  • This position will perform quality control and various CSU safety program activities. This will include performing daily, weekly, monthly and annual QA/QC on reagents/chemicals and equipment, managing laboratory safety and hazardous waste and participating in internal audits.

  • This position will write standard operating procedures and will maintain record keeping for all quality documents, worksheets and records related to laboratory procedures, processes and equipment.
