Position Summary

The RamCorps Fire Mitigation Member will work with CSU Extension and Timberline Fire Protection District to provide direct service and positive change to wildfire hazard risks in Gilpin County by participating in fire mitigation projects such as community chipping events, tree thinning on egress routes, and home ignition zone projects around residential homes. Gilpin County is rural mountain community located 60 miles west of the Denver metropolitan area. A successful candidate will enjoy working outdoors in the mountains. Duties include loading a chipper, hauling slash and logs, running chainsaw (if certified), and participating in community wildfire protection engagement events.

Term of Service / Time Commitment:

This is a part-time to full-time national and community service position requiring, at a minimum, a total of 450 hours (for quarter-time slots) or 900 hours (for half-time slots) during the six-month service term (approximately 20-40 hours/week, Monday through Friday). Some evening and weekend hours are possible. The position begins April 20, 2024 and ends October 18, 2024 (or until filled).

Training and Support Provided: Members receive significant training and experience in community

engagement, project implementation, leadership, diverse populations, and more. Up to 20% (or 90 hours for quarter-time, 180 hours for half-time) of total hours served may be spent in applicable approved trainings. Members will be supervised and supported by Jennifer Cook, Gilpin County Extension Director,jennifer.cook@colostate.edu, as well as by Melinda Macpherson, RamCorps Program Manager,melinda.macpherson@colostate.edu. The cohort of members serving throughout the region will act as additional resources and support for each other.

Location and Service Conditions:

  • This position is based at the Gilpin County CSU Extension office – 230 Norton Drive, Black Hawk, CO 80422 and at Timberline Fire Protection District station 3 – 19126 Highway 119, Black Hawk, CO 80422, and may involve service in neighboring communities.

  • Position will require work outdoors during extreme temperatures (below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and above 90 degrees Fahrenheit), and at high elevations (8,300-9,500 feet).

  • Position will require standing, kneeling, stooping/bending, lifting, squatting, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, reaching away from the body, repetitive motion, feeding a chipper and possible chainsaw operations.

  • Position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (Identifying objects by touch) depth perception and color vision.

  • Position requires the ability to lift items more than one hundred fifty pounds occasionally and up to sixty pounds frequently.

Program Benefits:

  • A living allowance of approximately $776 for half-time members and $388 for quarter-time members per pay period on a bi-weekly cycle for an approximate total of $9,315 (half-time) or $4,657 (quarter-time) for the term of service. Taxes are deducted and the living allowance is distributed by direct deposit to the member.

  • An education award is earned upon successful completion of term of service (half-time: $3,447.50; quarter-time: $1,824.07).

  • It is possible to temporarily postpone repayment of qualified student loans through forbearance while serving as an AmeriCorps member.

  • Housing benefit: low-cost housing options in Gilpin County will be provided. Member may find their own housing as well.

  • Mileage reimbursement for travel to required trainings and days of service.

  • Access to ongoing professional development trainings and resources through the university.

  • Experience working with professionals in the field with on the ground training.

  • Other certifications, experience include gaining knowledge of montane ecosystems; native plant, noxious weed, and tree identification; tree pest and disease identification; and fire mitigation prescriptions in mixed conifer forests and around residential homes.

Position Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old at start of service.

  • Must be a high school graduate or GED recipient.

  • Must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.

  • Able to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (state, FBI , and National Sex Offender Public Website checks) per 45 CFR 2540.202.

  • Be able to pass a National Wildlife Coordinating Group ( NWCG ) Arduous Work Capacity Test.

  • Wear official AmeriCorps identity items such as name tag, T-shirts, and lapel pins during all AmeriCorps service.

  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work respectfully and inclusively with a diverse population.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Computer skills: familiarity with MS Office 365, especially Outlook and SharePoint, and Zoom.

  • Ability to learn and retain complex information with accuracy and to follow procedures consistently and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Enjoy working outside, in the mountains.

  • This position requires standing, kneeling, stooping/bending, lifting, squatting, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, reaching away from the body, repetitive motion, feeding a chipper and possible chainsaw operations depending on the candidates’ qualifications.

  • This position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (Identifying objects by touch) depth perception and color vision.

  • Must possess the ability to lift items more than one hundred fifty pounds occasionally and up to sixty pounds frequently.

  • The position requires the ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the job.

  • Will be required to work in all weather conditions and in extreme temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
