Corewell Health K9 Security Officer in Farmington Hills, Michigan

Job Summary

The K-9 Officer performs a variety of duties and tasks related to customer service and maintaining a secure and orderly environment and protection of the grounds. The K-9 Officer works in tandem with a canine partner. The K-9 Team regularly patrols hospital property, screens visitors and performs other activities relating to the safety and security of staff, patients and visitors. The K-9 Team protects hospital property, employees, patients and visitors against fire, theft, vandalism, aggressive individuals and other illegal or unauthorized activities. The K-9 Team is responsible for 24-hour on-call response where their presence is likely to aid in a favorable resolution. The K-9 Officer maintains 24-hour responsibility for his/her canine partner ensuring a healthy environment at work and home, inclusive of proper feeding, bathing, grooming, social activities, exercise, training, regular physical inspections, medical care and the like. The K-9 Team participates in regularly scheduled training programs and exercises designed to improve the proficiency of the handler and dog and accustom the canine to react and perform in various situations and environments. The K-9 Team may participate in joint K-9 events and activities in conjunction with local police and other external agencies. This position may require Public Act 330 certification and will have the ability to arrest for misdemeanors offenses and will be required to complete the Michigan State Police PA330 certification requirements.

Essential Functions

  • Regularly monitors conditions and activities while patrolling the hospital facility. Ensures relevant Corewell Health policies are followed and violations are reported

  • Takes responsibility for anticipating, recognizing and appraising safety/security risks and hazards; initiates appropriate action to reduce or remove them.

  • Responds appropriately to a variety of potential and/or real emergencies, alarms and extraordinary events (e.g. patient standby/restraint, person with weapons, fire and building alarms, medical emergencies, etc.)

  • Determines, once on the scene, whether or not his/her canine is to be utilized based on the handlers assessment of the situation and knowledge of the dog’s capabilities.

  • Responds to complaints generated by security dispatch, staff, patients and visitors (e.g. suspicious activity, improper access, larceny, lost property, etc.) and investigates same, writes related security reports.

  • Exposes, introduces and manages the canine in a variety of environments and situations within the hospital. Regularly interacts and is approachable by patients, visitors and staff. May use the canine to assist with a variety of patient and visitor social and therapeutic needs.

  • Completes routine daily log and /or investigation reports as required, documents non-routine activities for referral and data collection to supervision.

  • Maintains all security equipment in working conditions inclusive of all canine equipment.

  • Participates in public appearances and educational demonstrations as authorized by the Director.

  • Assists Emergency Center staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures providing security and maintaining order in the decontamination areas.

  • Uses proactive non-violent verbal de-escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations without escalating the event into a violent incident. Uses defensive tactics if necessary to safeguard lives and well-being of staff, patients and visitors. Ensures the safety of the canine during all activities.

  • May make arrests for felonies or misdemeanors dependent on PA 330 status. Writes hospital and/or City parking tickets where authorized.

  • May carry and use Taser while on duty if qualified under BH Security Department policy.

  • May provide CPR/first aid in the event of a medical emergency on campus or common areas until trained medical staff arrives from the Hospital Emergency Department or Local Fire Department/CEMS as per the 250 yard rule of Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA).

  • Provides for and ensures the safety and comfort of the canine – provides appropriate rest periods, water, and cooling, etc. while on assigned shifts.

  • Maintains the working proficiency and training of his/her canine and is held accountable for the proper use of the dog. Participates in all formal training and socialization activities. Continues training and socialization of the canine off-shift.

  • Regards the canine as a member of the family unit and is responsible 24/7 for the canine. Provides for ensures safe and friendly interactions with the family unit.

  • Testifies at legal proceedings when necessary.

  • Maintains and ensures the safety of the canine during all activities both on and off-duty/shift.

  • Schedules and ensures the canine receives a yearly examination by the department selected licensed veterinarian. Ensures the canine is treated immediately for any sickness or injury.

Qualifications

  • Required High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Required OCC Criminal Justice Center canine handler graduated, PA 330 (arrest authority), graduate of aggressive behavior management verbal and physical intervention.

  • 2 years of relevant experience Requires a minimum of two years in a public or proprietary security organization, military security experience as part of the armed forces or public police experience. Required

  • K-9 experience Preferred

  • LIC-Driver's License - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required

  • CRT-Automated External Defibrillator (AED) - UNKNOWN Unknown 90 Days required

  • CRT-First Aid - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required

  • LIC-Michigan Concealed Pistol License - STATE_MI State of Michigan preferred

  • CRT-At least one Certification from preferred list - UNKNOWN Unknown required
