Job Summary - Director, Surgical Services Farmington Hills Grosse Pointe

The Director of Surgery is responsible for managing nursing and ancillary service leaders and team members in pre-operative, operating rooms/procedure suites, post-anesthesia care unit and Central Processing Department at any combination of Corewell Health hospital(s) or ambulatory surgical settings. This role may be inclusive of endoscopy services. Through a matrix reporting structure, this role is responsible for coordination of care, improving patient care processes and outcomes, providing leadership for professional nursing practice, selecting and maintaining competent staff, and operating in a cost-effective manner. Must have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, strong business acumen, analytical and creative problem solving skills, and be a results oriented strategic thinker.

Essential Functions - Director, Surgical Services Farmington Hills Grosse Pointe

  • Develops and maintains quality monitoring system to continuously monitor and measure the quality, safety and outcomes of care services. Develops service/ unit quality indicators to evaluate unit performance, staff performance, level of practice for specific patient populations and develops improvement plans to correct variances. Participates in and facilitates interdisciplinary performance initiatives. Responsible for ensuring a positive culture of safety.

    Collaborates with the Surgical Services senior leadership, medical director, medical staff, nursing staff, other departments and/or professional groups to develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services that support patient care delivery, and plan effective utilization of workforce, facilities and equipment.

Supports all initiatives of Patient and Family Experience. Ensures a positive experience for all customers including, but not limited to patients, families, visitors, surgeons, staff and vendors. Supports all Patient Family Centered Care initiatives.

Sits on and/or supports all initiatives of the Finance, Operations and Strategic Growth Committees. Participates in and supports VAT initiatives. Fiscally responsible for team performance, development and oversight of capital and expense budgets. Manages productivity measures effectively through strategic resource allocation. Works directly with Operating Room manager(s) to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Follows AORN, ASPAN, SGNA, AAMI, TJC and Magnet standards.

Performs regular rounding interacting with staff, surgeons, patients, families and visitors. Directs recruitment, screening, hiring, performance plans and terminations. Coaches, mentors and facilitates team to achieve targets of success. Works with multiple team members with diverse backgrounds and experience to align around Mission and goals of the organization. Skilled with managing conflict effectively.

Develops, maintains, and evaluates a professional practice environment that empowers and supports staff. Encourages shared decision-making, accountability, and autonomy. Establishes and promotes a framework for professional nursing practice which includes mission, vision, core values, philosophy, evidence-based practice, and standards of practice. Serves as a role model and mentor to staff, colleagues and students . Effective problem-solving skills, crucial conversation experience and intrinsic coaching ability essential. Computer experience is essential.

Inspires individual and organizational excellence. Energizes stakeholders and sustains their commitment to changes in approaches, processes, and strategies. Acts as a change agent, being able to articulate and effect change in people, processes, and technology.

5-10 years of experience in Surgical Services with at least 3 years in a management role. Required
