About the role:

Liquid I.V. is looking for an experienced, highly organized scientific leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment to join the scientific affairs team as Sr. Director, Scientific Affairs.

You will lead a team to deliver research, science and education programs that accomplish strategic objectives that include differentiated product offerings, products with novel claims, intellectual property, and scientific leadership. You will operate with the mindset of an individual contributor, build, and deploy capabilities to ensure high scientific rigor and timely delivery of outcomes.

The ideal candidate is a proven industry research leader with deep experience in building and managing research programs. You are driven by a profound passion for hydration science, sports nutrition, and their translation to innovation. This role presents an exciting chance to contribute to both foundational and advanced research in functional hydration, collaborate within a dynamic team, influence innovation, and contribute to Liquid IV’s leadership position.

Functions and duties of this role include, but not limited to:

Scientific Affairs Program Management

  • Develop and implement the operating plan for scientific affairs program which includes strategy, budget planning and execution to meet the overall program goals and vision.

  • Oversight and accountability of the research programs including all key milestones and deliverables to expand product claims, uncover novel insights, generate intellectual property, and research publications.

Product Science, Innovation, and IP Support

  • Oversight and accountability of the scientific claim’s substantiation as a key scientific liaison in claims generation and regulatory review process.

  • Develop and implement policies & procedures to ensure strength of evidence for claims substantiation.

  • Develop a program to continually evaluate science literature and competitive landscape with an eye for new product concepts, product improvements, new marketing (claims & content) opportunities and keeping claim substantiation updated.

  • Facilitate front end innovation by supporting concept development with novel ingredients, scientific insights to address consumer tension.

  • Serve as the company's science expert on claims substantiation, providing direction and insights to appropriate internal stakeholders on existing, new, and emerging ingredients.

  • Oversight and accountability of intellectual property applications with the legal team.

Education, Scientific Communication & Outreach

  • Provide scientific, technical, and research expertise to the business functions within the company to support activities of existing product offerings and identification of new products and their respective development.

  • Translate science into differentiated and meaningful business applications and develop science and education content for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Maintain a network of key opinion leaders and facilitate scientific advisory board meetings.

  • Develop and deliver technical, product and research presentations on behalf of the company to customers, industry partners, at conferences, workshops, and training events.

  • Stay up-to date with scientific publications and updates in hydration science, sports nutrition, and related fields.

  • Facilitate collaboration with the Regulatory and Brand team to develop science-based content for use in product sell sheets, blogs, website, social media, newsletters, and other consumer-facing promotional/health programs.

People Management

  • Develop, implement, and manage individual and team OKRs with an ownership mindset to drive accountability and ensure the performance management goals are met.

  • Directly manage and lead direct reports to success by providing clear direction, coaching, and support.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Biochemistry, Biology or related fields.

  • 12+ years of experience building and leading a scientific affairs function at dietary supplement or sports nutrition companies.

  • 3+ years of people management experience.

  • Proven experience leading and inspiring high-performing teams, mentoring, and coaching/developing.

  • Experience in conducting original research in nutrition, exercise science or hydration science is required along with a strong publication track record.

  • Experience in reviewing and interpreting scientific literature as it pertains to claims substantiation with an ability to write, review claims/product substantiations.

  • Working knowledge of USFDA food and DSHEA regulations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong collaborator able to artfully share scientific perspective and guidance while building on the ideas of others.

  • Ability to communicate complicated scientific information to a non-technical audience to influence a better result.

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid / Office environment with travel up to 25% including international.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

The expected base salary range for this position is $170,000 to $200,000. The exact base salary is determined by various factors including experience, skills, education, geographic location, internal company equity, and budget.
