Position Summary

The Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Michigan State University is currently establishing a pool of fixed term assistant professors and instructors in the field of Art Education. These positions will be filled per course/per semester, on an as needed basis. Applicants in this pool are reviewed when the program has an immediate need to fill a vacancy and could begin as early as August 16, 2022 with formal instruction beginning on August 31, 2022

The Art Education Program at MSU is in transition, and successful candidates will have a voice in its redesign, working closely with both the Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Art, Art History and Design. Education in visual art across all ages is a tool to allow those whose voices are rarely heard, a chance to speak and to be seen. We will be establishing ties to underserved art communities across the state of MI, rethinking and reimagining curriculum and pushing the boundaries of what Art Education can be. Our successful candidate will exhibit intellectual flexibility, a capacity to work across departments and modes of intellectual inquiry and a profound commitment to classroom teaching.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in Art Education.

Doctorate

Minimum Requirements

  • BA in Art Education or equivalent required.

  • Teaching Certificate and Experience teaching art at the K-12 level required.

Desired Qualifications

  • MA, MFA, or PhD in Art Education or related field desired.

  • Experience teaching at the college level desired

c) a statement of teaching philosophy that highlights your alignment with some of our desired qualifications, including past course experience and sample syllabi;

d) portfolio of student work of up to 20 images

e) a one-page summary of your experience with diversity in the classroom and/or in your past or planned research endeavors, any experience mentoring diverse students or faculty, any experience mentoring diverse students or community outreach initiatives, and an explanation of how you will advance our goals of inclusive excellence;

f) the names and email addresses of 3 potential referees.
