Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs oversees the following colleges, schools, and offices: the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities; College of Health & Sciences; James E. Shepard Library; School of Library & Information Sciences; School of Law; School of Education; School of Business; School of Graduate Studies; Research & Sponsored Programs; Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute; Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise; University College; Division of Extended Studies; Enrollment Management; Title III; International Affairs; Institutional Research and Analysis; and other offices, including the Academic Resource Management Office.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is the Chief Academic Affairs Officer of the University, providing primary administrative leadership, direction, and evaluation for all academic activities and faculty affairs of the University. The Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs assumes the full responsibilities of the Office of the Chancellor during periods when the Chancellor is unavailable or otherwise unable to fulfill their duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Fosters intellectual growth, student learning, scholarly and creative activities by providing academic strategic planning, administrative leadership, direction, and evaluation for all academic activities and faculty affairs at the University, providing leadership in the campus and advancing multidisciplinary scholarship, and providing leadership and guidance on diversity initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.
Ensures an active and expanding dialogue with external constituencies by encouraging partnerships with external constituents and public organizations, engaging in effective university advancement.
Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required.
Minimum Education/Experience
An earned Doctorate is required.
Academic credentials consistent with the rank of professor, as demonstrated by a distinguished record of teaching, scholarly publications, and/or creative accomplishments that exhibit a commitment to academic excellence are required.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Serves as chief academic affairs officer for the Division of Academic Affairs and provost for NCCU.
As Provost, this position will serve on the Chancellor’s Cabinet.
Administers and provides overall leadership for academic undergraduate and graduate degree programs, university college/general education, teacher licensure, distance education and extended learning, online programs, military education, summer school; academic support services including the library, enrollment management, financial aid, registrar, institutional effectiveness and assessment, institutional research, international education, Title Ill, sponsored programs and research, university testing; pre-college and outreach programs; and special initiatives.
Function Decision Making
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
- Demonstrates sound fiscal management and empirical-based decision-making by overseeing program development, budgets, and facilities of all academic and academic support units. Implements the strategic academic vision by authorizing faculty appointments, recommending all promotions and tenure decisions to the Chancellor, making final decisions about the allocation of academic space, working with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in addressing the educational support needs and extra-curricular priorities for students, and with the other Vice Chancellors and senior leadership of the University in coordinating and overseeing the overall mission of the University.
Function Leadership
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Works with deans, department chairs, and faculty to identify and achieve strategic goals and to establish a common academic vision that embraces the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Provides oversight for faculty recruitment, appointment, reappointment, tenure, promotion, and post-tenure review; and promotes faculty, administrators, and staff.
Function Strategic Analysis and Planning
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Produces relevant reports required by NCCU, UNC System Office, government agencies and other educational partners as required.
Develops strategic partnerships with internal and external constituencies to advance the goals of Academic Affairs.
Spearheads efforts to identify new sources of funding for departments and units within Academic Affairs.
