Description
Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, the Deputy provides general oversight and direction to the Department of Transportation which is primarily responsible for the planning, scheduling and operations of public transit within the City of Detroit.
Examples of Duties
Sets and changes policy and operational direction consistent with legal requirements and the vision, mission and goals set forth by the department.
Ensures the effective acquisition, scheduling, dispatching and maintenance of transportation vehicles and equipment.
Establishes and implements policies, procedures, and standards for the efficient, safe, and effective operation of the municipal public transportation system.
Creates and implements strategic planning for the internal divisions and provides direction to division managers.
Ensures operational metrics, goals and key performance indicators are measured accurately and met on a consistent basis.
Manages public transportation operations and activities, including facility and fleet maintenance in compliance with Federal Trade Association (FTA) and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
Recommends and implements improvements to transportation programs which meet the needs of the ridership, while maintaining customer focused environment.
Represents the department at City Council and with other public events and official contacts.
Assists in the preparation and management of the Department's budget.
Interfaces with other City agencies to ensure that programs and activities are consistently aligned with other City related priorities and to ensure efficient and seamless provision of overlapping City services.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
Five or more years' experience at the executive level management for a transportation department including extensive knowledge of transit operations, facility and fleet maintenance.
Thorough understanding of laws and regulations related to the transportation industry.
Demonstrated ability to work well with internal shareholders including other departments and collective bargaining units.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education requirements of this position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
