The Work Unit:

Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR)

The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively monitor, detect, diagnose, prepare for, and nimbly respond to, all types of conditions and events that impact the public’s health.

TheVaccine Preventable Disease Unitmonitors, investigates, and controls epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute, including enteric diseases, invasive bacterial diseases, respiratory diseases, vaccine preventable diseases, zoonotic diseases, foodborne and waterborne diseases, tuberculosis and healthcare associated infections.

What You Will Be Doing:

The VPD surveillance coordinator supports surveillance for VPDs including, but not limited to, measles, mumps, rubella, congenital rubella syndrome, varicella, pertussis, H. influenzae, meningococcal disease, tetanus, diphtheria, paralytic poliomyelitis, non-paralytic poliovirus infection, and acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). This position maintains, cleans, and submits VPD enhanced surveillance data to CDC. The position participates in VPD investigations and outbreaks.

Responsibilities of the position include but not limited to:

  • Maintain and clean enhanced VPD surveillance variables related to varicella, mumps, invasive meningococcal disease, and Haemophilus influenzae. Ensure collection of complete sociodemographic data (e.g., race and ethnicity, location/residence, industry and occupation) to advance health equity.

  • Ensure the integration between various data systems (EpiTrax, CIIS, ELRetc) to ensure accurate VPD surveillance case data is flowing appropriately between systems by working with the EpiTrax team.

  • Maintain the process of online varicella reporting by working with IDRP to ensure varicella cases are being accurately entered into the disease surveillance system (CEDRS/EpiTrax).

  • Participate in enhanced surveillance activities.

  • Update/create new guidance related to VPD disease control and surveillance.

  • Researches and compiles guidance materials to vaccine preventable epidemiologists. Preserve and organize documentation related to outbreak response efforts.

  • Update protocols for VPD surveillance with local public health agencies, healthcare providers, infection control practitioners, school nurses, child care directors, and regional field epidemiologists statewide.

  • Contribute to written reports that summarize cases and outbreaks of VPD.

  • Conduct patient interviews, review medical records, and complete surveillance forms for investigations of vaccine preventable disease (VPD).

  • Follow and implement published guidance provided by CDPHE and CDC related to surveillance and disease control of VPDs.

  • Assure investigations of reported cases of VPD by local public health agencies are completed and accurately entered into the communicable disease reporting system (CEDRS/EpiTrax).

  • Request bacterial isolates from clinical laboratories to the CDPHE laboratory in a timely manner.

  • Apply knowledge of privacy laws (such as HIPAA) to protect patient confidentiality. Participate in training or consultation to public health partners.

  • On assigned days, this position participates in the routine epi-call schedule by answering email questions and telephone calls from health care providers, patients, and the public on a variety of communicable diseases issues that may not be directly related to vaccine preventable diseases but are of public health concern.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Option 1:

Six (6) years of relevant experience working in communicable disease surveillance and epidemiology. C ommunicable disease surveillance is the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of population based health data.

OR:

Option 2:

A combination of related education from an accredited institution in Public Health, Biology, C ommunity Health, Epidemiology, or other closely related field of study. AND/OR Relevant experience working in communicable disease surveillance and epidemiology that is equal to six (6) years . C ommunicable disease surveillance is the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of population based health data.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following highly desirable experience and competencies:

  • Relevant experience with the State of Colorado.

  • A Masters Degree in Public Health or Epidemiology.

  • Ability to gather relevant information; identify and analyze problems; and use sound reasoning to arrive at conclusions.

  • Ability to determine objectives and strategies; set priorities; coordinate with others.

  • Experience in communicable disease surveillance and outbreak response.

  • Experience using public health databases, with d ata analysis skills.

  • Statistical and visualization software experience such as SAS, SQL Server Management Studio, and/or Tableau.
