Director Infection Prevention

Job Summary

The Director of Infection Prevention will have direct oversight for strategic, operational initiatives necessary to ensure surveillance data integrity and accuracy, regulatory compliance, accreditation readiness, and reduction in harm to patients through evidence-based, highly-reliable, and sustainable infection prevention strategies. In addition, this individual will have personnel and financial/budget responsibilities for assigned entities. In addition he/she will provide support and content expertise to entity Infection Preventionist's and leadership regarding surveillance and infection prevention practices. Similarly, this individual will provide support to the system entities and work collaboratively with all THR Chief Quality and Medical Officers.

Job Duties

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Operations

  1. Leads a multi-disciplinary team in development of an annual IP plan, based on population(s) served and services provided; collect/analyzes data to assess the effectiveness of the IP plan and modifies as needed.

  2. Utilizes epidemiological principles to conduct surveillance and leads outbreak investigations.

  3. Designs and provides educational programs based on the needs of staff, patients, students, and visitors.

  4. Conducts IPC rounds, based on annual and periodic risk assessments, to ensure compliance with IPC standards and regulatory requirements.

  5. Assesses the risk of occupational exposures to infectious disease and recommends strategies for prevention.

  6. Contributes to antimicrobial stewardship (AS) efforts by identifying and detecting MDROs among the population served, reporting surveillance trends over time, using surveillance data, and analyzing antibiograms.

  7. Participates in the design, development, and implementation of emergency management programs for emerging disease preparedness.

  8. Interfaces and serves as the liaison to System Services Infection Prevention.

  1. Participates in an infection prevention and control professional organization.

  2. Serves as subject matter expert for infection prevention and control.

Leadership

  1. Utilizes the principles of influence, leadership, and change management to advance program goals and ensure changes are vetted by all stakeholder groups.

  2. Utilizes skills in communication, relationship-building, and facilitation to ensure that all healthcare workers feel accountable for preventing and controlling infections.

  3. Mentors the Infection Prevention staff and assists them in translating textbook concepts and evidence-based guidelines to real-life clinical needs and situations.

  4. Works comfortably in a matrixed organizational structure.

  5. Allocates and accounts for the use of fiscal resources, weighing alternatives and their benefits. Seeks ways to reduce cost and applies return-on-investment (ROI) principles to establish the value of a product, service, or additional staffing.

Quality Improvement

  1. Identifies opportunities for improvement and continuously looks for ways to improve system processes and reduce harm using the principles of High Reliability.

  2. Conducts and develops comprehensive risk assessments, prioritizes potential risks, and recommends evidence-based strategies for risk reduction.

  3. Uses PI methodology to assess performance, sets achievable goals, uses data to initiate changes, and develops measures that will ensure sustainability of the improvement.

IPC Informatics

  1. Leverages electronic systems to input, analyze, extract, and manage data to support and drive data integrity, streamline processes, innovate IPC practices, and achieve positive patient outcomes.

  2. Creates meaningful electronic reports to enhance infection prevention initiatives and guide strategy discussions with key stakeholders.

  3. Reports required information to local, state and federal agencies in an accurate and timely manner.

Research

  1. Conducts critical evaluation of research and evidence-based practices and incorporates appropriate findings into policies and guidelines.

  2. Identifies barriers for implementation of evidence-based practices and develops strategies to minimize or remove barriers.

  3. Incorporates research and makes informed decisions when recommending products, devices, and supplies to use and implement.

Education

  1. Provide quarterly education to all graduate medical education residents at THFW.

  2. Provide in-person orientation for all new residents during July 1 onboarding.

  3. Ensure competencies are met on an ongoing basis with all residents and work collaboratively with GME Program Leadership to ensure accountability.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Medical Technology or related field required and a Master's Degree Business or Healthcare related field (preferred) or a Master's Degree in Public Health or Ph.D. in Infectious Disease or related field or, M.D or D.O. required.

Experience

3 years acute care hospital, alternate care setting (Rehab, LTC, SNU) or infectious disease epidemiology required

2 years Supervisory experience in Infection Prevention (IP Program Manager or IP Manager) preferred

Licenses and Certifications

RN - Registered Nurse If Bachelor's degree in Nursing required upon hire. Or, MT(ASCP) - Medical Technologist if Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology or Biology required upon hire. Or, M(ASCP) - Microbiology if Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology or Biology required upon hire.

CIC - Certification in Infection Prevention and Control required upon hire

Skills

Knowledge and experience in areas of patient care practices, microbiology, asepsis, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, infectious diseases, communication, computer and data management, program administration, and epidemiology is preferred.
