Case Western Reserve University Research Technician 3 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under limited supervision, the Research Technician 3 will assume responsibility for all aspects of the operation of the undergraduate laboratory stockrooms and all operations pertaining to undergraduate laboratory support activities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Administer experiments. Assist faculty and laboratory staff with schedule and preparation of experiments for all undergraduate laboratories. Organize and assign student drawers and oversee control of drawer inventory during check-in and check-out procedures. Prepare chemicals and solutions for undergraduate laboratory course, CHEM306. Arrange, distribute and collect laboratory supplies and equipment necessary for experiments according to specifications for CHEM306. Update preparation procedures for experiments in each course, as needed. Prepare, standardize and distribute reagents and solutions to be used in multiple courses. Assist supervisor with update preparation procedures for experiments in each course, as needed. Work collaboratively with students, staff and faculty as directed by supervisor. Provide some analysis and interpretation of results as appropriate. (55%)
  2. Order chemicals, glassware and reagents each week. Stock and distribute laboratory materials to students. Work with lab instructors and graduate teaching assistants to collect and tag hazardous chemical waste for proper disposal through safety services. Maintain all undergraduate laboratories, and two stockroom areas for order, efficiency and effective laboratory and stockroom operation. Maintain records, reports and inventory. Implement policies, procedures and equipment design to facilitate proper operations of undergraduate laboratories. Assist with the implementation of sustainability initiatives in undergraduate laboratories. Maintain laboratory equipment for proper operation. Install, maintain and repair complex equipment. (20%)
  3. Assist the principal investigator of the Chemistry Department Tissue Culture Laboratory as well as the faculty who use the facility with daily operations of the room. Tasks include assisting the principal investigator with daily inspections of all the hoods, incubators, airflow instruments and electrical outlets to ensure all are in working order. Provide assistance with setup and implementation of experiments in the hoods and on the benchtops to postdoctoral scholars, graduate and undergraduate research assistants. Ensure daily/weekly that all bio-waste is disposed of properly using the correct protocols. Assist faculty on an annual basis with updating chemical hygiene plans for all research groups using the laboratory in order to maintain Environmental Health and Safety protocols. Ensure all faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and undergraduate students using the facility have taken and passed the Environmental Health and Safety lab safety exams. Monitor proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage in the facility. Assist department manager with individuals requesting access to the room. (20%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with laboratory manager. Frequent contact with faculty and teaching assistants in the undergraduate labs. Regular contact with the department's business office to exchange information.

University: Moderate contact with maintenance, security and housekeeping; contact with personnel from the department of Occupational and Safety Services on as needed basis.

External: Regular contact with vendors and technicians in regard to procurement and repair.

Students: Daily contact with undergraduate students and graduate student teaching assistants in the teaching labs.

None.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 2 to 5 years of experience in a laboratory environment.
