GCG Sr. Data Engineer - Chicago, IL in Chicago, Illinois

Overview

GCG is looking to add a Data Engineer to our corporate IT team. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert on Microsoft SQL Server and the Azure Data platform . You will analyze and propose solutions to complex data gathering or transformation problems. In addition, you will lead and provide technical guidance and mentorship to other team members as well as stakeholders throughout the business.

This position can be hybrid based in our Chicago, IL headquarters, or fully remote for exceptionally qualified candidates.

What you'll do

  • Participate in the solution development process, including planning and monitoring solution development efforts, coordinating activities with other team members, and reviewing deliverables and communicating status to management

  • Design, develop, document, and support ETL/ELT and quality-control for data warehousing efforts

  • Develop complex SQL queries and stored procedures

  • Educate and transfer knowledge to other team members to further refine best practice delivery for all stakeholders

  • Build SQL queries, procedures, and tables; convert them into leverageable data cubes within Power BI

  • Collaborate with third-party vendors and internal team members to maintain a scalable BI architecture in a high pace of change environment with a particular focus on acquisition-related data

  • Develop processes and procedures to migrate data from acquired companies' systems to the primary BI environment

  • Review use cases, edge cases, and other requirements documentation for clarity, completeness, and ensure proper detail is included to enable accurate estimates and quality development

  • Build and maintain data validation procedures to ensure BI information is accurate and timely

  • Setup, track, and provide monthly reporting and analysis on BI KPIs for usage and adoption

  • Work within a prioritized portfolio of Project & Enhancement requests and provide accurate estimates on time to completion

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, and/or related program or equivalent work experience

  • Experience working with, building, and maintaining an Enterprise Data Warehouse and related ETL processes

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server, including SSIS Tabular, SSIS, and SSRS

  • Experience designing and implementing data architectures in Azure including Azure Data Factory, Azure/Managed Instance SQL Server, Azure Logic App, and Azure Analysis Services

  • Strong background in Microsoft SQL, stored procedures, and RDBMS concepts

  • Experience balancing support, analysis and project work responsibilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of functional business areas and their ERP generated datasets: e.g., General Ledger (GL), Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Sales Orders, Purchasing and Inventory

  • Experience working with MS Power BI or other similar analytic & presentation layer platform creating data structures and/or cubes

  • Previous experience working with manufacturing and wholesale business models and datasets, as well as Merger & Acquisition activity with a focus on the resulting data integration work

  • Experience with automated scripting of data validation checks as information moves through layers of an EDW

  • Proven ability to prioritize work and expectations in a dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities

  • Advanced analytical skills to troubleshoot and resolve system problems

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
