About the Department

The Schwrer Lab is interested in understanding the metabolic programs that govern regenerative responses in health and become maleficent in disease, focusing on the role of fibroblasts. The laboratory combines mouse models and novel culture systems with metabolic flux analysis to investigate how nutrient availability and utilization dictates fibroblast identity and function, and how this contributes to cancer, fibrosis, and inflammation.

Job Summary

The Research Technician will perform experiments to investigate the metabolic control of cancer-associated fibroblasts in vitro and in genetically engineered mouse models of cancer. The successful candidate will have exceptional organization skills and will assist with the daily operations of the laboratory including animal colony management, cell and molecular biology experiments, collecting and recording data under the guidance of the principal investigator.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute daily laboratory experiments, including mammalian cell culture, 3D organoid culture, molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning), Western Blot, RNA isolation and qRT-PCR, and sample preparation for metabolomic analysis.
  • Work with mouse models, including breeding of mice, weaning pups, genotyping.
  • Assist in management of mouse colony.
  • Note keeping and recording experimental data.
  • Order, receive, label and safely store lab supplies.
  • Maintain and renew inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in training students and new laboratory personnel in laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

  • Bachelor\'s degree in Biological Sciences or related field.

Experience:

  • Relevant research experience.
  • Experience in handling and working with mice.

Preferred Competencies

  • Basic computer skills (including Microsoft Office).
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis.
  • Ability to work with little direct oversight.
  • Ability to work within a larger research team.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
