About the Department

Molecular and Cytogenetic Pathology at University of Chicago includes one of the nation\'s leading clinical genomic oncology groups. The group includes a clinical genomics laboratory dedicated to applying innovative next generation sequencing assays to help support improved diagnostics and personalized oncology patient care.

Job Summary

The Genomic Variant Analyst assesses the clinical significance of gene variants identified by next generation sequencing for oncology patients and drafts provisional test reports to assist pathologists with case review and completion. This position works under the direction of the Laboratory Directors and involves interactions with laboratory directors, laboratory technologists, bioinformaticians, and clinicians.

Responsibilities

  • NGS specimen triage, communicate with ordering physicians regarding validity of NGS tests.
  • NGS run quality control, troubleshooting with lab technicians and bioinformaticians.
  • Evaluating and implementing variant interpretation standards and workflows.
  • Performing interpretation of genetic tests and crafting of provisional medical reports.
  • Trains rotating pathology residents and fellows for variant interpretation and NGS case review.
  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Contributes to facilitating and promoting a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.
  • Trains new laboratory personnel.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Previous cancer and next generation sequencing experience.
  • A strong knowledge base in human genetics and cancer genetics.

Working Conditions

  • Lab environment.
  • Weekend/evening hours: Due to the nature of clinical service, the variant analyst may need to work during weekend/evening hours to help with generating the reports in a timely manner. Meanwhile, the work hours of this position are flexible.
