Job Description:
Under direction, the class functions as a working supervisor, supervising and performing work as an Emergency Medical Technician, providing basic medical care and services. The EMS Supervisor oversees operations, performs all operational duties of an EMT, engages in proactive outreach, and related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Supervises and directly participates in the work of Emergency Medical Technicians functioning as members of the Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) team providing pre-hospital emergency medical care including patient assessments, treatments, and referrals or transport on a daily basis
Participates in the development of work standards and the performance evaluation of staff
Schedules and assigns staff in conjunction with senior management
Responds in collaboration with other team members, to 911 calls and other crisis lifelines with an identified behavioral health component and provide crisis assessment, crisis intervention, de- escalation, safety planning, referrals, and linkage to care services for residents
Assesses vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, respirations, pulse oximetry, etc.)
Provides basic prehospital medical care to patients by stabilizing emergencies (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, or trauma incidents, etc.)
Transports patients to medical facilities, including alternate destinations and Emergency Departments, for further stabilization
Ensures quality of care and that delivery of services remains compassionate, trauma-informed, and attentive to the particular needs and values of each patient
Ensures accurate and timely reporting and documentation in compliance with department, Region 11, and City of Chicago standards
Ensures complaints, accidents, and incident investigations are documented and reported
Monitors equipment and materials needed
Operates and maintains City vehicles for emergency response and day-to-day operations
Provides input to management regarding fleet maintenance, service, equipment and supplies, documentation and record keeping operations
Reviews and evaluates EMTs performance, conducting after-action review
Monitors overall wellbeing of EMTs
Stays abreast of current events and trends which may lead to an increase in potentially hazardous calls that could possibly affect first responders
Tracks program utilization and medical care trends to make informed recommendations that best meet the needs of the community
Coordinates continuing medical education seminars for clinical staff and identifies additional training opportunities
Participates in team/department meetings, in-services, and case coordination sessions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience
High School Diploma or GED Certification
Three (3) years of EMS work experience, of which one (1) year is in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician
18 years of age or older
A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
Credentialing under Region 11, Chicago EMS Systems including EMS System Entry and all required EMS Continuing Education updates for maintenance once hired
Pass a background check
WORKING CONDITIONS
Operates out of a vehicle when in the field
General office environment
Ability to work flexible and on-call hours may be required. Hours can change depending on program needs
Possible exposure to infectious waste
EQUIPMENT
Standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, printer, photocopier, calculator)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to walk and stand for extended period of time
Ability to bend, kneel, crouch and move one’s hands/arms to grasp or manipulate objects
Some lifting (up to 25 pounds) is required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER WORK REQUIREMENTS
Comprehensive knowledge of:
*basic emergency and prehospital care training acquired through EMT training
*EMT scope of practice including Region 11 EMS protocols, policies, and procedures
*applicable emergency medical equipment, instruments, materials, and supplies
Some knowledge of:
applicable computer hardware and software technology
report preparation methods, practices, and procedures
geographical locations within the City of Chicago
supervisory methods, practices, and procedures
Knowledge of applicable City and department policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and ordinances
Other knowledge as required for successful performance in the Emergency Medical Technician class
