Stantec’s archaeological team has conducted some of the largest and most interesting archaeological projects in Canada for a highly variable client base and working across a range of industries. Our project opportunities include survey (impact assessment) and archaeological excavation/mitigation, working in variable settings including municipal lands, prairies, parkland, boreal and Arctic. Your Opportunity

Stantec is currently seeking a Senior Archaeologist (permit holder) to join our Archaeology team in Calgary. Your role will include conducting and leading archaeological assessment, site evaluation, mitigative excavation, and construction monitoring, as well as other tasks as assigned. You will undertake shovel testing, test unit excavation, block excavation, soil profile description, artifact analyses, and preparation of detailed field notes and archaeological site records. You must be able and willing to work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. You must demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety and be willing to work independently or with limited supervision when conditions are appropriate. You will work closely with Stantec's project managers, other archaeological permit holders, field crews of varying sizes, artifact analysts, GIS technicians, and potentially with other environmental staff and Indigenous participants.

This is a full time, permanent position. The position is benefits eligible, with overtime and the ability to bank time.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Directing archaeological fieldwork including field crew supervision.

  • Fieldwork locations include Alberta, NWT and Nunavut, with opportunities in other parts of western/northern Canada.

  • Fieldwork may include archaeological impact assessment/survey, mitigative excavation studies, and construction monitoring.

  • Ability to travel and work non-standard work weeks and long days in variable weather and physical settings.

  • Physically demanding work often in remote field settings with limited access to services, including medical services.

  • Operation of a motor vehicle, including pickup trucks and trailering, as well as ATV/UTVs. Training will be provided as required.

  • Operation of other types of motor equipment including archaeological power screens (training provided).

  • Working near mobile equipment and heavy machinery.

  • Some projects include travel in helicopter and small aircraft.

  • Artifact analysis, interpretation and report writing.

  • Regulatory and client communication.

  • Completion of projects efficiently within allocated budgets and timelines.

  • A strong commitment to safety, including annual safety training, the right to refuse unsafe work, and the use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to Drug & Alcohol policies.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Approved or eligible to hold archaeological permits in Alberta and/or Western/Northern Canada

  • Historical resources field experience in Western and/or Northern Canada (Alberta, Nunavut and/or NWT experience is an asset), as well as experience with reporting and analysis tasks.

  • Experience at conducting historical resource studies for a variety of development sectors is an asset.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Education and Experience

Minimally a Master’s degree in Archaeology or related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in archaeological fieldwork.

Two (2) years’ permit-holding experience in Western/Northern Canada is preferred; however, more junior applicants will also be considered.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather, and very physical work. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
