Position Summary:

This position is immediately available in the lab of Dr. Yolanda Huang (Department of Microbiology & Immunology (https://medicine.buffalo.edu/departments/micro.html) ). The lab’s research focuses on discovering new functions encoded among gut anaerobic bacteria and bacteriophages using high-throughput functional genomics. We are also interested in bacteria-phage interactions and how phages alter bacterial physiology and microbial composition dynamics. The overall goal is to advance our understanding of the gut microbiota at the molecular level. Research projects leverage cutting-edge techniques, including DNA barcoding, short and long read sequencing technologies, and high-throughput functional genomics. Responsibilities will include leading research projects, developing new protocols, mentoring students, presenting research outcomes, and publishing. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in microbiology, bioengineering, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or a related field, and have demonstrated research productivity. Expertise in any of the following areas is desired: microbiology of anaerobes and phages, generation and analysis of sequencing data, bioinformatics, various -omics techniques, biochemistry, and bacterial genetics. The lab is committed to the success of all members and provides mentorship and opportunities for research and career development.

Expertise in any of the following areas is an asset: anaerobe and/or phage isolation and cultivation, high-throughput assay development, functional genomics, sequencing, bioinformatics, biochemistry, microbial genetics, and analytical chemistry ( HPLC , LC-MS).

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting routine experiments, establishing new protocols.

  • Timely recording of accurate experimental details and results.

  • Performing data interpretations and communicating findings to the PI.

  • Participating and contributing to group meetings.

  • Writing manuscripts related to the project; assisting in preparation of research proposals.

  • Participating and presenting work at conferences, workshops.

  • Training and mentoring junior lab members; assisting others when/where expertise is needed.

  • Performing weekly lab maintenance duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or the equivalent from a foreign university.

  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in one or more of the following: isolation/cultivation of anaerobes and/or phages, anaerobic techniques, functional genomics, sequencing, high-throughput assay development, biochemistry, bioinformatics, analytical chemistry (LC-MS, HPLC ), and microbial genetics.

  • Ability to publish and present research data.

  • Self-motivation, ability to work independently and collaborative within a team, time-management and organizational skills, strong communication skills.
