The Brooklyn Center Community Schools (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our Special Education Teaching team this summer as a Special Education Educational Assistant ESY! BCCS holds an inclusive ESY program that ensures students with disabilities have additional access to general education summer programs and a well-rounded summer experience! The Special Education staff will provide ESY services (academic, functional, and transition instruction) to eligible students in the special education setting, and will provide targeted support and instruction to students with disabilities in the general education setting. Work is performed under the general direction of the onsite Administrator/ ESY Teacher. ** This job posting is open until May 1. To ensure adequate staffing, applicants will be considered upon the submission of their application. The posting will close early if all position have been filled. The posting will be open to external applicants on 3/1/2024.ESY will run alongside STEP and LEAP for K-12. ECSE students will have a shortened program. Secondary (BCS, Insight) June 17th - July 25th MONDAY-THURSDAY Student hours 9:30am-1pm Elem (BCE) June 17th - July 25th MONDAY-THURSDAY, Student hours 8am-2pmECSE (@BCE)a 2 hour student program will run in July, MONDAY-THURSDAYPay: Per the 2023/24 salary scheduleDuty Days and Hours: See program options above. *Total SEA staff paid hours are variable! Total SEA work hours include student contact time listed above, in addition to before and after program time supporting breakfast and bussing and teacher collaboration. This additional time will add up to approximately 1-2 hours each day depending on the program and students. Breaks and unpaid lunch periods will be provided based on the total hours scheduled. Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with instructional and non-instructional activities, including homework, classroom assignments, toileting, feeding, dressing, mobility, etc.

  • Establishes positive relationships with students and acts as a role model for appropriate social skills and behaviors in all situations.

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.

  • Helps teacher(s) manage student behavior by applying proactive strategies.

  • Assumes safety responsibilities for students in all environments.

  • Reviews student Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs).

  • Collects data in accordance with the student's IEP goals and objectives as directed by licensed staff.

  • Reinforces instruction through individual or small group activities; keeps students focused on tasks assigned by teacher(s).

  • Oversees and supervises students throughout the day, including field trips, program events, boarding, and unboarding buses, lunch periods, recess, and other settings where teacher(s) may not be present; chaperones students to and from class.

  • Assists students with learning organizational and computer literacy skills.

  • Maintains service logs and records on students.

  • Assists with preparing lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.

  • Distributes teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students; distributes and collects tests and homework assignments.

  • Grades homework and tests; computes and records results using answer sheets or electronic marking devices.

  • Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials in order to prevent injuries and damage.

  • Observes students' performance and records relevant data to assess progress.

  • Provides disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities.

  • Organizes and supervises games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.

  • Attend staff meetings and parent/teacher conferences and serves on committees as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge,Skills and, Abilities Preferred:

  • Thorough knowledge of the English language structure and content, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  • General knowledge of curriculum and training design principles and methods.

  • General knowledge of teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

  • Experience in the use of computers and other technology equipment.

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively, both orally and in written form.

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions precisely.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, officials, associates, parents, and the general public.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working as an educational or teacher's assistant, paraprofessional, or equivalent combination of education and experience

PhysicalRequirements: Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and exposure to bodily fluids; may be required to wear a mask and other personal protective equipment in a pandemic outbreak; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic).
