Rex Lumber EHS Manager in Brookhaven, Mississippi

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Responsible for all aspects of environmental, health, and safety at the mill, working as a team with management, supervisors, employees, and outside contractors. The goal of the Safety Manager is to develop and maintain a proactive safety program designed to keep all employees, outside contractors, and visitors safe on the mill property. Ensure mill compliance with all federal environmental, health, and safety regulations and Rex Lumber's Safety policies. Manage workers' compensation claims beginning with post-accident investigations through claim closure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safety -- Lead on safety with full participation of supervisors, employees, and management.
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of OSHA regulations and company policies to ensure compliance. Directs the dissemination of new regulations and policies or changes to existing regulations and policies.
  • Responsible for conducting or facilitating monthly mill-wide safety meetings.
  • Responsible for conducting Drug Tests (Random and New Hires -- with the assistance of HR).
  • Responsible for leading or facilitating weekly/monthly Continuous Improvement Team meetings. Review ideas and findings from the          CIT meetings with management to encourage the implementation of good ideas.
  • Responsible for conducting or facilitating daily/weekly walk-throughs to ensure continued employee and department compliance.                  Promptly address violations with employees and management. Recommend or issue disciplinary actions when warranted.
  • Responsible for maintaining, in good condition, all plant signage (bilingually, if needed).
  • Responsible for training or directing the training of supervisors and employees on working safely.
  • Responsible for training new employees on safety with the assistance of co-workers, supervisors, and management.
  • Responsible for fire prevention measures. Conduct routine inspections to identify problem areas. Work with supervisors and management to promptly correct deficient areas.  Follow up to make sure implementation occurs.
  • Responsible for maintaining relationships with the local Fire Department with regular meetings and on-site visits.
  • Responsible for promptly recording all injuries and illnesses in accordance with federal regulations and company policies.
  • Responsible for facilitating OSHA 10 training for all supervisors, Continuous Improvement Team members and maintenance employees.
  • Responsible for conducting safety orientation for all contractors, collecting all current insurance information and having indemnity agreement executed.
  • Responsible for backing up the Human Resources Manager, as required.
  • Assist supervisors and management, from a safety perspective with all other areas of operations, projects, facility maintenance, property protection, and new employee selection process.
  •  Workers' Compensation -- Process new claims (First Report of Injury must be filed with insurance within 7 days of notification of accident).
  • Responsible for investigating new accidents. Review findings, root cause, and corrective actions with supervisors, managers and the           Continuous Improvement Team.
  • Responsible for maintaining communication with employees, insurance adjusters, and medical providers.
  • Responsible for developing a good working relationship with local medical providers with a goal of educating them on recordable vs. non-recordable and Rex Lumber's back-to-work program. This includes ensuring correct company contact information is provided to medical facilities.
  • Responsible for maintaining all documents pertaining to workers' compensation and communicating any changes to the insurance agent and company as required. Including maintaining the OSHA log.
  • Responsible for reviewing quarterly with management and supervisors their department's incident rate, work comp claims, associated cos , trends, etc. Set goals for improvement working together.
  • Assist supervisors with accident investigation forms, follow-up.
  • Environmental Affairs, Health, and Compliance -- Work closely with the General Manager and Corporate General Counsel to develop environmental and health policy and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and implements the company's positions on environmental policy issues regarding the impact of its operations on water, air, and land quality.
  • Designs and implements programs to ensure healthy and safe working conditions and compliance with all environmental regulations, including but not limited to, clean air, hazardous waste disposal, and stormwater on the company's premises.
  • Serves as the liaison with external governmental environmental agencies.
  • Monitors programs and maintains up-to-date records required by environmental permits to ensure regulatory compliance and working with outside consultants when necessary.
  • Develops and implements practices and procedures to ensure compliance with government safety and health laws, standards and regulations, and industrial hygiene.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attend all meetings -- including daily/weekly/monthly Management meetings to go over safety training, safety and workers' compensation issues.
  • The above represents the majority of the duties associated with this position but there may be additional aspects of the position not listed here. Flexibility is required.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • The Safety Manager is a key member of the management team and reports to the General Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Management or Industrial Hygiene, preferred
  • Safety experience in a manufacturing environment, preferred
  • Management experience required
  • Workers' compensation knowledge
  • OSHA knowledge required, OSHA 30 Certifications will be required within the 1st year of employment.
