WKU Student Publications -- home of the College Heights Herald, Talisman, Student Publications Advertising and Cherry Creative -- has an opening on its professional staff for a Manager/Advertising and Sales. We're looking for a proven sales professional with a high level of initiative and entrepreneurial spirit to lead the operation generating revenue for our nationally known, student-led media. The successful candidate will have a dynamic view of media advertising, a passion for advising and working with students, an eagerness to work in a team environment, handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously, and a willingness to be creative in all aspects of the job.

The Manager, Advertising and Sales reports to the Director of WKU Student Publications, but works closely with the advisers to our news and magazine operations and our branded content studio, as well as with other professional staff members and students.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.

  • Actively pursues and develops new business for all units and products housed within WKU Student Publications -- the College Heights Herald and WKUHerald.com news publications, Talisman and WKUTalisman.com life and culture publications, and Cherry Creative branded content studio, with both national and local businesses and organizations that do not currently advertise through WKU Student Publications.

  • Has a demonstrated strong understanding of advertising and sponsorship in digital products, including news and feature websites, newsletters, social media, specialty websites, as well as live and virtual events.

  • Maintains strong client relationships with existing advertisers, ensuring our flagship publications, the College Heights Herald and the Talisman, as well as our other products and events, are satisfactorily meeting clients' advertising needs while also gathering artwork, collecting payment and carrying out other tasks necessary to service client accounts.

  • Works with professional and student staffs to develop new products and increase revenues.

  • Advises the student advertising staff, including hiring and directly supervising the student Advertising Manager.

  • Provides regular training to student advertising staff members, including a workshop at the beginning of each semester and ongoing development throughout their time on staff.

  • Provides support in terms of practicing sales presentations, sales calls, and following up on student sales staff.

  • Sets sales goals and tracks progress.

  • Actively works with the Business Office to ensure that revenue from advertising sales is collected.

  • Sets student sales commissions.

  • Approves and submits commission vouchers.

  • Cultivates strong relationships with national advertising agencies to solicit advertising for print and digital products and events.

  • Serves as the primary contact and in-house expert on the AdPro advertising management system, or any other advertising management and billing system that the Office of Student Publications may use.

  • Represents WKU Student Publications and its student-led divisions in the community through organizations such as the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce and the Professional Marketing Association.

  • Assists in distribution of print products, including the College Heights Herald, the Talisman and specialty publications, as needed and consults with adviser to the College Heights Herald on off-campus distribution points.

  • Analyzes the analytics of digital products (websites, newsletters, social media) and makes monthly reports to the appropriate student staffs.

  • Oversees student advertising staff on evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Proofs advertisements in a timely manner to ensure correct advertisements are published.

  • Maintains regular office hours and participates in planning activities and events as part of the WKU Student Publications professional team.

  • Attends advertising and sales staff meetings and helps provide creative solutions to meet the needs of advertisers and generate revenue.

  • Works with the adviser to Cherry Creative to assist in aggressively developing the branded content studio to provide services to clients and increase revenue to Student Publications.

  • Oversees sales and assists in production of View of the Hill, the summer magazine for incoming freshmen; and for events such as the WKU Housing Fair and the Best of the Hill Festival.

  • Maintains inventory and oversees sales of advertising positions in outdoor and indoor distribution kiosks across the WKU campus.

  • Maintains existing and produces new revenue from local and national advertising sales for all products of WKU Student Publications.

  • Works with other professional staffers and the Director of Student Publications to help with promotions and to produce a regular advertising newsletter.

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, sales, advertising or a related field.

  • Professional experience in advertising, sales, marketing or a related field.

  • Experience in a team environment working with deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize, manage, and prioritize time and projects effectively and to successfully multitask.

  • Valid driver's license.

    Additional Information:

Salary: $41,208 plus sales commission
